Meditation
Sunday, Ordinary 32, Proper 27 lessons jump from Joshua’s pointed demand of the Children of Israel to put away the ancient gods of the Euphrates and the gods of the Canaanites and trust the true supreme God, YHWH to the story of the end times in the epistle to the Thessalonians to the Gospel lesson of the ten virgins.
The theme of each underscored how important it was to be ready for God and to turn away from false gods. If people divided their attentions between the false gods and God, they would find themselves disobeying the law of God and the consequences could be deadly.
The foolish virgins, who came to the wedding banquet unprepared, had to leave to procure oil for their lamps. The bridegroom came while they were gone and the women who were ready and prepared entered into the wedding, but those who arrived late, were not given admittance. Current protocols allow for people to come to a wedding late, but thee used to be a time not too long ago, when once the bride and groom had entered the church, the doors were closed and no one could be admitted. The story of the virgins resembled those more strict admittance guidelines. But the real meaning was simply that if God returned to this earth to bring believers to heaven with him, those who were ready by giving their hearts to God and professing faith in Christ, would be taken to heaven, while those who rejected the gift of God, would be rejected from access to heaven.
The Psalmist sang his song about the greatness of God and the reasons for being ready to worship God. Joshua addressed his people and challenged them to make a choice between the ancient gods/idols that Abraham’s family had worshipped in Ur, or the gods of the Amorites in Canaan and the one true God of Israel. He restated his point again and again emphasizing its importance. Each time, the people declared their intention to follow God and obey his law. They agreed to put away their other gods and worship God alone.
In the New Testament epistle to the Thessalonians, Paul explained to the church what happened to those who had died—those who had gone ahead of the remaining church people. Many had thought to see Christ return in that same century, so they were concerned when people they knew started dying. Paul assured that God would return an all those who had died, would be raised up first and then those who were alive still, would be drawn p together with them into heaven. No one had a thing to worry about. God had a clear plan for everyone. Everyone who was ready, that was. All the more reason for all of us to be prepared by turning our hearts to the Lord and being ready for his second coming.
Thanks be to God.

Matthew 25:1-13
King James Version (KJV)
25 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Conclusion
Sunday, Ordinary 32, Proper 27 brought the Children of Israel to the point of confession. Joshua was not going to accept waffling or shifting sentiments. He wanted the Hebrew people to make a choice—choose to follow God and him alone. God had told Moses that he was a jealous God and didn’t want to share his people’s faith—split between false gods and the one True God. Joshua challenged his people to make an oath, make a confession and declare themselves either followers of those other gods or a true follower of God. He stated it more than once, pushing for their commitment. They responded that they would.
The Psalmist sang of the great days of the past when God brought Israel into the Promised Land and provided for their needs. He pointed noted more than once that they would not forget it, implying the consequences of their carelessness.
The New Testament Gospel was Christ’s lesson about being prepared for the Second Coming. When he would return, he would only receive those who had been ready and had professed their sins and confessed Jesus as Lord and Savior. If they hadn’t done that, Jesus pointed out that it would be too late.
The Thessalonian church wondered if something were too late. Christ had not returned. The Second Coming hadn’t happened and they thought it had been going to happen in their lifetime. But when friends began dying and the Second Coming hadn’t happened, they wondered if they had missed something. Pau assured them that they had nothing to worry about. Those, who ‘slept’ or had died would be raised to join Christ in the clouds. Them those who were still alive would join them. Those who were alive and remained would respond to the ‘shout’ of the Lord and the trumpet of Go and the voice of the archangel—a noisy event.
The theme was being ready for God and not being distracted by false things/gods, so when Christ returns in the clouds, those alive would join him after he gathered those who have died before. No worries for thee believer.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
