Meditation
Monday, Ordinary 32, Proper 27 lessons brought us to the end of Joshua’s life. He had insisted in yesterday’s lesson that the Children of Israel make their stand on whether they would follow God or not. He pressed them to make a commitment and they did. He set up an altar and standing stones to recognize the event-the moment in time when the Children of Israel made that commitment. Joshua knew he was going to die and he wanted to prepare his people for the eventuality. He did his work correctly because while he was present they didn’t go away from God. They followed God and obeyed his commandments. Even after Joshua, the elders, whom he had taught and guided, continued to lead the children of Israel in the way that they should go. So they started on their time in the Promised Land going the way of the Lord.
The Psalmist reviewed all the aspects of the Exodus and the children of Israel coming to the Promised Land and how they had encountered those who were against God but God prevailed over all their enemies. They should never forget that was the Psalmist’s message.
Joshua made sure they wouldn’t forget. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians about their speaking in tongues. Glossolalia. God used people to speak in languages different from their own to reach out to the many different cultures that were present on the Day of Pentecost. So each person heard the good news in their own language. Of course, people hearing the different languages spoken thought it was gibberish.
The church at Corinth was on the major thoroughfare from the east to the west. All the cultures of the known world sailed through Corinth. Unlike many churches, where the first converts began in Jewish synagogues or temples, the believers at Corinth were from the pagan shrines. The Jews were familiar with the Scriptures and knew a great deal of history of the church. The pagans did not. So God bestowed upon the church in Corinth amazing spiritual gifts. They were so ‘endowed’ with gifts, they began to be a little cocky and smug about their ‘skills and talents’ for Christianity. Pal tried to point out in the ‘love’ chapter before this lesson that love was more important than gifts. In chapter 14, Paul went further to explain that the ability to speak in tongues was not for the believer but for the unbeliever. Just as the Day of Pentecost resulted in many hearing about Christ spoken in their own languages because there were so many cultures present, the Corinthian church had a sort of mini-Pentecost routinely since so many cultures passed through their town and visited their church.
The Corinthians were proud of their many gifts—when they should have been more humble, since the gifts were given by God out of the need of the church. The increased numbers of blessing of gifts could easily have been an indication of the overwhelming need of the church for instruction that was not misguided. Paul noted in chapter 14 how the blessing of speaking in tongues was not for their benefit but for the unbeliever that stepped through their doors. The unbeliever walking into a Greek church, but hearing words spoken in his own language even though the Corinthian speaking it had no clue what s/he was saying, would fall down on his knees with his face to the ground and be able to say, “Truly God is here among you!”
We can be grateful for the Word of God that we have at our fingertips because God is always among us. It’s power uplifts us. It’s power convicts the sinner and gives grace to redeem us.
Thanks be to God.

26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
27 And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.

28 So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
29 And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
30 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.
31 And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.

Conclusion
Monday, Ordinary 32, Proper 27 brought the Children of Israel to the point of confession. Joshua was not going to accept waffling or shifting sentiments. He wanted the Hebrew people to make a choice—choose to follow God and him alone. God had told Moses that he was a jealous God and didn’t want to share his people’s faith—split between false gods and the one True God. Joshua challenged his people to make an oath, make a confession and declare themselves either followers of those other gods or a true follower of God. He stated it more than once, pushing for their commitment. They responded that they would.
His work was done and he died at over 100 years of age and he was buried. His elders carried out his funeral along with Joseph’s bones that had been brought from Egypt to Shechem.
The Psalmist sang of the great days of the past when God brought Israel into the Promised Land and provided for their needs. He pointed noted more than once that they would not forget it, implying the consequences of their carelessness.
The New Testament Gospel was Christ’s lesson about being prepared for the Second Coming. When he would return, he would only receive those who had been ready and had professed their sins and confessed Jesus as Lord and Savior. If they hadn’t done that, Jesus pointed out that it would be too late.
The Thessalonian church wondered if something were too late. Christ had not returned. The Second Coming hadn’t happened and they thought it had been going to happen in their lifetime. But when friends began dying and the Second Coming hadn’t happened, they wondered if they had missed something. Pau assured them that they had nothing to worry about. Those, who ‘slept’ or had died would be raised to join Christ in the clouds. Them those who were still alive would join them. Those who were alive and remained would respond to the ‘shout’ of the Lord and the trumpet of Go and the voice of the archangel—a noisy event.
The theme was being ready for God and not being distracted by false things/gods, so when Christ returns in the clouds, those alive would join him after he gathered those who have died before. No worries for thee believer.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
