Zombies, Run! 5K app - I like it!

So, I started the Zombies, Run! 5K program yesterday and thought I would tell you about it, because it was fun, the program made the exercise pass much more quickly than usual, and it is appropriate for people who are starting at a low level of athletic ability (like moi!).

It is very cool. Basically, it combines a running program with a story where you are a character, and have to do tasks and train to have adventures. It really gets the blood pumping and the adrenaline going, and somehow makes the exercise pass faster. The program is interval running, and it starts off at a very low level of cardio exercise and gradually increases from there. Compared to C25K, it seems to start at a more manageable level, and increase in intensity at a slower rate. So, workout 1 consisted of 10 minutes of walking, 15 minutes of 15 second run - 1 minute walk intervals, and then 10 minute of "free form running" where you can walk, jog, skip, or do whatever to keep your heartrate where it needs to be. The app tracks your pace and your distance. Yesterday, in 35 minutes, I walked/jogged 2.75 miles at my local park. That is a 12.4 minute mile. Not too bad!

You can use this app indoors (on a treadmill) or outdoors. Outdoors, your info gets tracked by GPS. Inside, your info is tracked by an accelerometer function. Though I have not used this in conjunction with other apps, I read last night that you can also have other apps running at the same time, like mapmyrun, so you can collect extra data if you want to. With my bluetooth HR monitor and the associated app, I can automatically upload to MFP the report of my exercise, with a reasonably accurate estimate of calories burned.

Also, the app has a related website, which uploads your runs and data, and keeps track of how you are progressing .

All in all - this early review is a good one. It is a more gradual increase in intensity than C25K, which is important for me, because I injured myself during C25K by increasing pace and distance too quickly.

Yay! I am so glad you guys are trying this out! Isn't it fun, but really creepy, especially if you run in the early part of the morning when it is still a little gray outside?

My name on there is KateMatt313, but I am having a hard time syncing my phone to the webpage that keeps all of your stats and the history of your runs. Don't know if you can find me! They are trying to figure out what the problem is!

I have worked on putting together a Zombies running list. So far, I like: Bad Reputation/Joan Jett; lots of Florence and the Machine (Kiss with a Fist, Drumming Song); Queen/ Another one bites the dust; REM / End of the World; Heart/Barracuda; Twisted Sister/ We're not gonna take it. Let me know if you have any good songs to add. I'm trying to keep it a little dark, so I get that adrenaline thing going.

I have not even thought about trying to make a "play list"... I am technology challenged. Whatever my phone plays, it plays. :)

Yes, we have a rail trail and while it cuts through the heart of the city, it's creepy as heck since I always do my walking at night.....well after 6pm. I tried to start the other day, but after a short run, the larger incision told me it was unhappy so I had to stop. Oh well, i'll keep trying until it stops lol.
