Squat = back pain. Is there an alternative?

I've been noticing more and more discomfort in my low back with squating. I had spinal surgery last year and am really careful with what I do. If I squat to a bench (too high) it's OK, but if I go parallel or lower, I really feel it. I know how great squating is but I don't want to cause myself a more serious problem. Are there any alternatives or just continue as I am, not getting to parallel?

I really feel that "buttwink" is overused, but that sounds like a possibility here. It could be other muscles are under performing which is causing issues when you squat below parallel. Is it possible to post a video? If not I would stay above parallel, but work on strengthening hamstrings and core. Then maybe you can slowly work on getting lower without pain.0

You could try front or goblet squats to see if you feel the same type of pain? It's a lot less likely to cause "butt wink" and forces you to keep the core tight which will also help strengthen that if it's one of your issues. I've heard of a lot of people with back pain who switched to front squats and have pretty much sworn never to go back! lol0

I have done goblets without too much trouble- I haven't done front squats, though. Off to youtube to see some form videos! Thank you.0
