Meditation
Saturday, Ordinary 34, Proper 29 was about family. Who constituted the family of God? His people in the Old Testament Psalm 100, besides lifting up praise to God, acknowledged that God was creator. People were the created—the sheep of his pasture; his people that God would take care of, faithfully and consistently. The lesson in Ezekiel continued with the shepherd metaphor, enumerating the ways the ways that God, the shepherd, would protect his flock.
Sheep were not the brightest animals in the zoo. They would literally starve to death, if their water was not still to drink from and there would be no threat to them from enemies. So, for them to feast in the presence of enemies (much like the 23rd Psalm also said) was a feat in itself. That meant the shepherd was so trusted that the sheep had no fear of being surrounded by enemies. For God’s family, there will be those, who would do harm to God’s people, just as Christ was crucified because he was a threat to those evil types in power. Yet, God’s people didn’t need to worry because God would watch over them and care for their needs.
Just as God brought the Jews out of Egypt and to the Promised Land; just as the battles to take the Promised Land back were successful because of God’s intervention the Lord would continue to intervene and keep the People of God protected.
The New Testament Gospel lesson took a sharp turn, when Jesus was told that his mother and siblings were waiting for him and wanted to talk with him. But Jesus saw beyond blood affiliation. Whoever would do God’s will were his family. While his family were important to him, the total family of the world of Christ-followers was his raison d’etre—his reason for being. Adoption. People who adopt children can treat them as if they were their own or as a second class child to the birth children. But the truth of Jesus was that all the family were equal—blood relative or adopted family.
That means that for us, today, we are as important to God as Jesus’ parents and siblings. And we are never treated as a second class family member.
Thanks be to God.

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

I hope you found a chance to encounter your Creator and experience the Love of God and the joy of Christ in Ordinary 34, Proper 29.
Conclusion
Saturday, Ordinary 34, Proper 29 brought the family of God to the foreground. From the Old Testament Psalmist and prophet Ezekiel the metaphor of the good Shepherd, or God, caring for his flock—his people—his family to the New Testament definition of the Family of God by Jesus, it was made clear that those who would obey and follow the will of God constituted his family.
Jesus was told his blood relations wanted to talk with him, but he demonstrated that his view of family was much more inclusive. Anyone who did the will of his Father, were his family.
The beauty of being a first class citizen of the family of God instead of a second class ‘step-child’ rendered Christianity unique. Other religions gave priority on the basis of ‘work’ but Jesus gave everyone equality. His empowerment of people never stops. His presence is like the shepherd protecting the sheep while they ate in the pasture surrounded by enemies.
We are of equal value to God. It doesn’t matter if we are pastor, theologian, beggar or congregant. From the highest in the church to the poor on the street, all are equal in God’s eyes. We can count on his faithfulness, always.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
