Did a sprint workout for the first time since starting SL. I got a LOT faster, simply from lifting heavy in legs.

Same here! I am hoping that come Spring I will be ready to get out there and go strong on running and biking! Last year I strained my hip flexor while running and had to stop for quite a while for it to heal. Now with all of the strength training and stretching/mobility exercises I am hoping for an injury-free Summer!! BOOYAH :-)

This is a great thread! Why do I love lifting? Because it makes me feel bad-*kitten* strong! And that strength carries over into all other areas of my life. The confidence it's given me is so empowering!

I wasn't sure at 51 if I'd be able to actually "lift heavy." I had heard about the benefits including preserving bone density and muscle, and I knew it was important. But it was a little scary. When I read about SL, I thought "hey, this doesn't seem so complicated" and gave it a try. And I'm so glad I did. I've noticed so many changes in my body and what I'm now able to do in workouts and just every-day activities.

I'm not aiming to look 20 or 30 years younger; I just want to be the best I can be at my age and, boy, have I surprised even myself of what I'm capable of.

Of course, there is just a tiny bit of vanity involved too. Is it just me, or do you ladies find yourself flexing in front of the mirror?

This hits home with me... hi everyone I'm Shannon by the way and I'm on my 3rd week with SL. I love it it's the only workout I look forward to and DH laughs at me because i like the jelly feel my muscles get after the workout. am I the only one who likes that?

I was living with chronic knee pain after an arthroscopy at age 40 due to overuse from long-distance running. The doctors told me that my running days were over due to advanced arthritis and that I needed to stick to low weights on the leg machines and non-impact aerobic exercise. I followed this advice for 4 years with no improvement in pain levels, lots of frustration and a weight gain of about 40 pounds. I started SLs about 4 months ago - I was terrified of squatting at first. I now break parallel when squatting, my chronic knee pain and stiffness is gone, and I'm working my way up to 3-5 mile runs twice a week. I realize that everybody is different and I'm not telling people to ignore what their doctors tell them - but for me, the benefit of building functional strength in a balanced way was tremendous. That progress motivated me to also make dietary changes - all in all, about 10 pounds gone in 4 months. My plan is to carry on with SL until I'm 90 (at least). Rock on!

  • That's amazing @moreoxygen! My previously bad knees have improved so much with SL. I so wish the "don't squat if you have bad kness" myth would die already!
  • I noticed I had shoulder and back definition in the mirror last night before my shower. It seems to have shown up all of a sudden. Lifting is awesome.

trite but true. i had a stupid feckin' 'strategy' document to write which i got ambushed with last week and which was due to be presented this morning or off with my head. so i worked late last night, since yesterday was my first chance to get any real time to do it.

23 pompous pages of jargon and . . . pomposity, and by around 6:30 i was stumping round the block on a brief break and carrying on to myself about how i Just Don't want to go back there and do the last 6. but it's off-with-my-head time, so how i got round it was by telling myself: you can [if you really want to] take a really deep breath, set your mind hard, and squat 25 times with 100 pounds on your back. just go back in there and take a deep breath, and do it.

    it worked.
  • That's awesome motivation @canadianlbs‌

I would have had to give a presentation yesterday had we not had a snow day. I don't mind presenting itself but I hate the preparation (putting a Power Point together, writing out my speaking points, making sure I have possible questions answered, etc.). So I told myself that after I did the presentation, I'd go to the gym and have some me and iron time. Got me over my dread somewhat. Will have to use this when the presentation is rescheduled.

I've been doing HIIT for the last 2 weeks then switched to 5x5 this week. I want to feel even stronger especially my upper body. I feel stronger and am excited about the emergence of my new and sculpted body. Because I do taekwondo I reckon it will strengthen my legs so that my kicks are more powerful. This group is very inspiring.

@Graceious1‌ , I'm sure you are very strong with taekwondo but 5x5 should help even more!
