Just started gluten free lifestyle

Looking to add some friends that are gluten free too. I have Hashimoto's (autoimmune disease) and my doctor recommended a while back to try cutting gluten to see if it helps with symptoms. I'm coming to the end of my first week. :)

It's not as hard as I thought!

    My doctor just recommended an anti-inflammatory diet to help my GERD and blood pressure. So I am starting GF, dairy-free, no processed sugar. I don't eat that much processed flour anyhow, so I think losing the dairy is going to be harder for me. I'm glad this group is here - hoping there are some good ideas for GF/DF protein-y snacks beyond nuts. I like nuts, but don't love them.

    It is surprising what getting the right combination of eating habits can do. So I wish you the best of luck. However, if I may suggest going 100% all in gluten free before you decide it doesn't help. I know nothing about Hashimoto's only that with my children a little can be even worse than just eating it all the time. When they eat foods that bother them all the time the reactions are not as strong. However, now that it has been 2 years since they have eaten gluten (and other things) when they go eat it they have a very strong reaction.

    If cutting back on gluten or going wheat free works for you , good. But I do know a few with Hashi's that MUST be totally GF just like celiacs to get relief. Anyhow, welcome!

    Protein snacks could be meats - rolled turkey breast or roast beef from the deli (Naturals w/o added sodium and nitrates/chems), edamame, HB eggs, vegan protein powder smoothie mixes, all stuff I use although I can eat dairy and nuts also.

    I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's last September, and went gluten free. I have to say for me it's made a significant difference. After about 30 days I was telling someone that I really did not feel that different. Then I listed off the fact that I seemed to not be bloated anymore, and after eating a large meal my nose does not stop up any more, and I started sleeping very well and woke up rested, and my hair and skin seemed to be less dry. Anyway as i was listing off these things I realized I DID indeed feel different lol. I'm not looking back as I've not felt this well in years. I will tell you that I've not lost any weight but my first goal was to simply learn what I could and couldn't eat. Now I feel comfortable enough to actually try cutting a few calories here and there and add back gentle exercise. I was in horrible shape when they diagnosed me so compared to feeling like death warmed over going gluten free is a walk in the park.
