New to the group...knee pain question

Hi all...

I just finished my second half marathon (16 minute PR) on Sunday and am feeling surprising good. After my first half I was in pain/sore for about a week. This time I have already done one fast 3 mile walk (Monday) and yesterday I spent the day walking around the San Diego Zoo (can you say hills). The only thing that is bugging me is a pain on the anterior top of my knee. The pain started around mile 10.5 but I was able to push through and continue to run (not a continuous pain but there during the race). Now I am feeling it going up and down stairs and when moving from sitting to standing. First post half run is scheduled for tomorrow.

Suggestions, advice?

I am planning on having this week be an easy recovery week (two 3 miles runs) and then starting the training for my next half next week. My next half is August 18th.

    Hi!

Pressed for time so this will be short…

I've been reading this site for a few months and it seems like a good source. This page, particular, may help:

    http://runnersconnect.net/running-injury-prevention/runners-knee-symptoms-causes-and-research-backed-treatment-solutions-for-patellofemoral-pain-syndrome/

    This was interesting, too:

I was at the McMillan running camp a few weeks ago and injuries were a topic that we discussed. All of the coaches agreed that runners must increase their core and hip girdle strength. When those muscles are built up, injury rates plummet.

I'm doing some of the exercises shown here during my stretching (I stretch twice a day)

Good luck and I'll see you in SDO!

Thanks for the links! I guess this is my body's way of ensuring that I strength train in my next training cycle.

Are you running America's Finest? I am going to be starting my goal of the triple crown in August.

I'm doing the triple crown this year too! I think you have to complete all three races in the same calendar year though, starting with Carlsbad in January. I've done Carlsbad and La Jolla, and I'm signing up for AFC for my final race in August.

I agree on the strength training. My personal choice is yoga. Not sure it's the most efficient way to build those muscles, but I love it and it's done the trick for me so far.

Best of luck to you and great PR! I'm hoping for one in August myself :)

Cocco...you can have to do them in order but it doesn't matter which one you start with, just like Beach cities. My only worry is the weather for Carlsbad in January. We camp at south Carlsbad all summer so I will do a ton of my training runs along the water. Can't wait.

I pulled out my yoga for runners video yesterday and plan to make it a part of my weekly training routine.

ETA: You might be right on the triple crown. I have an email in to the race people. I might have to rethink my summer half. I am at the point right now where I want to do each half only once since there are so many good ones out there.

Have you tried a patella strap?

I haven't tried anything yet. I am going to try to run on it today and see how it feels.

As for the triple crown...I was totally wrong. You have to start with Carlsbad. Ugh...I am going to try and get into the Nike's Woman's half in San Francisco and sell my AFC entry if I get in. Then I will start the triple crown with Carlsbad.

Sounds like you have some tendonitis setting in. You are going to want to deal with it before ramping up your training again or it will not go away. Double check and make sure you don't need new shoes, I feel it in my knees when it's time for a new pair.

I also agree with training your core, and hip strength, I would also add knee strength. Women have wider hips and that puts more stress on our knees.

    Good luck-

"A trio of Southern California half marathons have formed an alliance to create a Half Marathon Triple Crown award to honor participants who finish all three half marathons in the same calendar year."

So sorry to rain on your parade. I made the same mistake last year. Almost signed up for AFC to go for the Triple Crown until I realized that darn calendar year part. I'm on the eligibility list this year and so darn excited! You'll love it next year.

Carlsbad this year was perfect with just a half zip and capris. Cool, but not freezing, and no rain. It claims to be one of the flattest courses, but there were definitely some ongoing rolling hills throughout the course. Nothing big, but just lots of smaller ones. I'd recommend doing some basic hill work to help with speed. Hill training for La Jolla is a MUST. That course has some massive hills. AFC looks fairly tame so I'm definitely hoping for a PR.

Malibu's half looks interesting, or maybe a rock 'n' roll one. So many choices!

I live in the foothills of the Saddleback Mountains so hills are a part of every run I do. But I do plan on pushing it once a week and hitting a really tough 1 mile section in repeats. Carlsbad is anything but flat. There are some great hills right around the campground that I run during the summer.

AFC is now my back-up half if I don't get into the Nike San Francisco half. If I do get in the half up north then I will sell off my AFC entry and just train hard with lots and lots of hills until October.

On another note, I ran an easy 3 yesterday and the knee did fine. A little sore right after but its all good this morning.

    Bump
This is very relevant to me - my right knee clicks and hurts when I sit down (but is perfectly fine while I run!). I don't want to make it worse though - so I'll be trying out the exercises above

    Thanks

    Great attitude!

    Yes.

I see the messages about the Triple Crown - looks like you're going to be otherwise busy.
