I actually went ahead and paid the subscription. It's daily, so I'll have a daily prod to be good! Thanks for the help!

Cool! BTW...I am good to start on the 2nd. Even if I stopped eating junk today, my bad choices will be pumping through my veins for a good day after. haha
  • I decided I'm going to sit on the sidelines for this. I'm still working on limiting my meat intake so some of the alternatives are no-nos on this plan. Understandable. I will follow all of you who do decide to go with it. It will be interesting to to hear everyones' experiences.

Hi, I am new to this group but have been listening to Fat2FitHQ since the beginning. I am in on this Whole 30. I read the book over a year ago but never actually tried to do one. Basically the book was just a reference for me as to how to eat better. With the support of this group I feel I am ready to finally give it a try.

Susan, great to hear you are joining us!

Forgive me all for the whining that follows...

I have not had Diet Coke all day in preparation for tomorrow's 1st day. Feeling good except for occasional headaches. Took a hit of coffee and they went away. Here's the thing, the BF ran to the store and came back with a pile of bad stuff that included several 2 litres of Diet Coke. I was so upset. We had discussed me starting and thought we were good to go. I went to take my shower after working out and shed a few tears. Just sad about it. Makes it harder when all this stuff is around. I am doing this darn it! Had to vent a little. Thanks for listening. Feel stronger already.

Welcome, Susan! We're just going to check in on the weekly thread, so we can keep it all together.

Kris, I didn't get my Sonic Hangover Burger, because they were closed! Luckily (not!), Jack In the Box was open.

Oh, and sorry for you delimma! That really does make it harder. I'm about to clean out my fridge, but sadly, we have two other people in the house and I can't just throw away all of their stuff!

Kris, :( I think your BF needs a swift kick in butt. Come on, he needs to be supportive. At least hide the stuff so it's not right in your face. You got this though!!!

Thanks y'all! I would kick him in the butt if he wasn't so awesome. he really is supportive, but we have done this so many times that I am sure he thinks it won't happen. All is good now. We need to figure out how to do this together. It isn't fair for me to think he should follow along. My big problem is I usually follow along to avoid turmoil, which as we know, is probably just an excuse for me NOT to follow through. There are always so many other things that come into play. You know, that head stuff you go through. I made it through dinner eating Whole30 approved. I was proud of myself for not eating the other stuff that was there:) Thanks again guys for the support and listening.

TJ, Sorry about the Sonic Burger being closed. I had no idea Jack in the Box was still around. I wanted to go and get the egg and cheese biscuit plus hash browns this morning, but didn't. STILL WANT THEM! lol

Yea, I don't remember exactly what happened, but they left the west coast years ago and resettled this area. I'm in South Louisiana. There's only one around me, but there's more a few miles away, in Baton Rouge.
  • Kris, As a former addict (drinking a 12 ok a day of diet Coke), I understand. Take it one day at a time. Happy New Year.

Thanks Jonny! I feel silly talking about it as an addiction when people fight true addictions to alcohol or drugs, but it really is for me. Of course I have been thinking about it non-stop and I have been drinking the stuff for 35 years and I am only 47. It has seen me through tough times and good times. Silly, I know. I am dealing with anxiety over it today. Mega anxiety. It's insane that it is such a crutch. Breathing in and out and find myself going to the fridge constantly. This will pass...

Whole30: I was going back and forth about tracking my food. I decided I am not logging it all in here. Instead I may just say "Nailed it today" or "Screwed up today..." I don't want to get too obsessive and trigger the past eating disorder. Slippery slope. Although I will be checking my list and I am sure mentally logging, I will just go with the flow for awhile:)

Kris - good plan I would discourage logging this early in the process, week 3 is a good place to calibrate your plate, after you find what makes for comfortable meals for you. til then rest well in the knowledge that it will I think surprise you when you do log it.

Kris, I'm not entering my food, but I am doing a photo journal. If you don't want to track in MFP, but want some accountability, you can post pics of your food in that thread. I don't know anything about your past disorder, so if it's something that would stress you out and maybe cause a trigger, then do what makes you comfortable.

Good job on the cokes! It will surely pass, but it will take some getting used to.

Kris, I wouldn't feel silly at all about saying your addicted to Diet Coke. Honestly, I feel the vast majority of us in this country are addicted to HFCS, aspartame and other artificial sweeteners. These things trick out bodies into actually wanting to eat more. The thing with drugs and alcohol, for the most part, is a person has to make a decision to obtain them. Food, on the other hand, is a necessity and these artificial sweeteners are in just about everything! Why is HFCS in bread? Ketchup? Of course to make it 'taste better' supposedly. I really was shocked when I started looking at labels closer. SO many 'sugars' in our food. NO wonder we can't stop eating!!!!

    Whole30 update...

I really like elements of it. The mega veggies, healthy fats, no sugar and no Diet Coke have not been an issue. What is an issue is protein. I dread eating it. If I never have chicken, tuna, eggs...again, I will be happy. Therefore getting in enough is starting to not happen, leaving me hungry. I miss the variety that quinoa and beans offer me. Playing with a whole bunch of veggies, but it is not filling that void. That is the major con for me.

    Pros...
-Had a bit of an awakening with the past eating disorder. It is something I kind of feel like I will always fight and that fight has been happening on and off since middle school. I struggled with bulimia, but not really a binger. Episodes of restriction and over-exercising. My relationship with food is different. I can't say that I have savored meals, always looking at it as simply fuel. Necessary, but eh, other than some cravings, could leave eating. Of course I have enjoyed some, but it is more connected to people (like something someone I loved made for me. Know what I mean?) How does this connect to this? I am longing for savoring the meals I was eating before. That is HUGE to me. I long for things like quinoa and the experience of eating what I think of as a "complete" meal for me. Seriously this is a first for me. I am realizing I am not a "low-carb" gal and that is okay. The things I am longing for are not "bad" foods. I do see that living with less is doable, but total elimination is not.

    Other pros...
-My skin is happy other than a little rosacea flair-up from the winter season (heat and wind).
-My belly is happier. No intestinal distress and feel less bloated.
-Energy was steady without highs and lows, but lack of protein is starting to lower it. Not the fault of Whole30.
-I am trying more recipes with veggies. I am pinning stuff like mad. Teaching me to do more than my standard preparation because it seemed easier.

In conclusion, although I was initially feeling disappointed with myself for struggling, I feel confident about this...
I am going to start eating some of my old carbs. Technically I will not be going Whole30. I will continue to implement some elements of it, but the major carb elimination is not happening anymore.

Thanks for getting me to try this. I have wanted to try something like this for forever and now I have. It was only nine days, but that's okay. I didn't continue something due to a need to be "perfect" while struggling. That is huge!

Kris: Good O, if you track your macros, you might want to look at keeping your carbs around 100-125 on non training days, and 150-200 on heavy training days, Most folks generally find that sustainable. Lentils and many beans can give you protein in sufficient quantities I like lentils because they are flavor neutral so you can spice them and mix them to give you any flavor you like. Lots of room to experiment.
Keep on Jammin and let us know how it goes.

Kristin: I think your tweak is fantastic. I think when the major purposes is to get people to start eating less processed food and move away from some of the toxic stuff. Your quinoa/ some of your grains might be exactly what your body needs. (The program allows white potatoes for goodness sakes!)
I think your comments are so inspiring. The amount of reflection that you do about your relationship with food is so insightful.he just a fantastic member of this community too. I love your posts and your interaction has been a big part of my success in sticking with it so far. Keep up the awesomeness girlfriend!

Hey Susan! How is it going for you, Newbie??
  • Kris, I feel you have done one of the most important things you can do which is eliminating the Diet Coke (I know eliminating Coke from my routine was very challenging, including withdrawal headaches). You've done amazing and decided there are some things that your body needs.

I do not have an eating disorder, so I cannot begin to understand what you deal with. However, you are making changes that appear to be working for you. Hang in there and keep making those positive choices.

    Hugs Kris..

Kris, I agree with Jen. You've already made huge changes, but you need to do what works for you. I don't even know what a lentil is, but if it works, eat it!

Thanks for joining us and keeping me motivated!

Kris, thank you for sharing. It's common for eating disorder and addiction issue to come back up when there are changes going on with your life. Keep fighting the good fight. You know how to do this! Unfortunately eating disorder along with addiction is not something that one can be "cured" you get better and learn how to cope with it, not using whatever your vice was as a coping mechanism. Also it's not "silly"

Continued... Also it not silly! ;) Don't trivialize it.
I think listing your pros is great! Sometimes people in recovery get complacent. We forget how bad things were. Making that list reminds you how far you've come and why you should never go back!
My advice: Learn what your triggers are and where your threshold is. I know what my triggers are and I avoid them, I know where my threshold is and I rarely let myself get to it.
Remember: You are a strong and beautiful woman. You got this!
    Big hugs

Carol: I'm not doing this Whole30 thing but I think it'd be great to hear everybody's journey on this. Those that completed it and those that didn't.. I know I'm interested to learn. :D

Carol, the whole 30 is going great for me. Cooking a lot from the Well Fed cookbooks I told you about. I mentioned in another thread that I convinced a woman at work to do it just by loaning her the book. Another person must have overheard us talking about it because she asked if she could borrow it too! I am thinking about getting another copy to pass around because it seems like it is contagious. It makes me excited to see people interested in improving their health.

Kris, I am sorry the whole 30 didn't work out for you, but I am a firm believer that people must do what works for them individually. We are all different and we must try things or we will never know if they work for us. Now you know that you need some of those other things in your diet. I don't know about you, but that kind of sounds like a win to me!

    Have a great day everyone!
