Avoiding the gym...

It is that time of year... when all the NY Resolutioners decide to join a gym---parking lot is crowded, can't find any machines that are not occupied-- what a hassle! So I am avoiding the gym until about mid-Feb when most of the "resolutioners" have quit and things get back to normal. My hot yoga classes get crowded, too, but less so because I go at 6am. Generally only the VERY committed are willing to get up at oh-dark-thirty to do hot yoga. Keeps the crowds down. :)

I haven't been to the gym in a while. I can't wait to get cleared so I can hit the gym and lift weights, crowds or not.

I went to the gym this afternoon and was shocked, it was emptier than usual! I think everyone was afraid of it being overcrowded

I have a treadmill and weights at home, so I do not need to go there to get in a workout-- thank God!

I think people are hungover today. Give a day or two lol. I like the local trails anyway. I have a membership but it's more for the weights....eventually i'll actually start using them lol. I hate the dreadwheel but they are convenient when it's cold and rainy.

I just bought my first kettlebell! It's 10 pounds and seems small and wussy --- until you start using it and count down the reps.

I belong to a gym and went to meet w/a personal trainer to see what it would be like. Well, at this gym you have to commit to a 1 yr contract w/the trainer, and to meet w/him 2 time per week would be $300 per month, or $3600 for the next year. That is not in my budget right now. So, I will be relying on my significant other for the weight training part. He worked at a fitness club for many years, so I know he knows what to do. I just wanted to have a separate trainer so when I was thinking evil thoughts about the trainer making me do another rep of some ugly exercise, it would be at a guy I could leave behind, not have to go home with.

The financial equation for a personal trainer has never made sense to me. I would want to hire a guy for a couple of sessions to teach me a couple of workout routines, not pay him twice a week (every week) to sit next to me and yell at me. I guess I need to spend more time on YouTube to learn and then yell at myself.

I have started doing a barre class-kind of a cross between pilates, ballet, and yoga. I'm sure there will be an uptick at the beginning of the year, but doubt it will be at the level of the gyms. I have decided on that in place of a personal trainer because you get some of the benefits (a good bit of resistance/strength work) at a fraction of the cost--more than a gym membership but considerably less than a trainer (125/month unlimited). At least for now its worth it.

I know exactly what you mean, I've been going to a clubin' cardio class for a few years. I love the class and the instructor, After New Years, the class is so crowded until around March!

I love the gym but am avoiding it for other reasons, This time of year (cold and dark) is hard for me to go since I have to go at 4:30 a.m. before work(I work an hour away from home), I do not go in the evenings because thats when the younger crowd gets there. I love walking nature trails and walking aroung my small town but again with my schedule its hard to do in the morning or evening due to darkness from the time change. I have started building my own home gym with several videos, a recumbent bike, elliptical and ab twist machine. I'm looking to get a treadmill, totalgym and heavy bag to ccomplete my gym. In the mean time I have found a Zumba and cardio blast class I can take at the salvation army after work twice a week, hoping to start Monday.

Thaeda, I agree. The gym is crazy these days. Like shonrecio I can only attend a certain time of the day since I work 3rd shift. I ordered Zumba and also the new P90 from Beachbody. I already have some free weights at home and that's what I'm going to use for workouts. Good luck to everyone and their goals this year!

I need the accountability of checking in at a gym. Before surgery I did exercises that were set up for me in my program by a movement specialist. After hitting a stall for the past month I know it's time to bring activity back into my program. I made the decision to take action and call Curves today. I've had success with their program in the past. I plan to renew my membership and get there 2-3 times to begin.
I don't own any exercise equipment but I also don't think that I have the discipline to work out at home. I look forward to the social factor of interacting with staff and participants and I like the way I can see how many calories I burned per workout.
I credit anyone who can do it on their own at home.
I live in an extremely harsh winter climate in Canada, so going for walks isn't much of an option till the spring because of the ice and snow. :)
