i used to eat 2 chapattis for lunch and dinner; ive reduced it to one only for each meal. so that helps cut out the calories.
so just look for the meals where you are consuming excess carbs; cut those out. eat less; slowly the body adjusts.
other rules that help are:
1. when hungry; first drink water as thirst also disguises itself as hunger. if still hungry, eat a low cal protein snack like roasted unsalted black channas and only then if you are still hungry, eat a carb food
2. stop consuming any form of artificial sugar; so no processed foods. no desserts.0 -
I have gradually reduced the amount of rice I eat to about maybe 1/2 cup in a week. This was not easy at first, being south Indian - but I got used to it. I now make more vegetable "stir frys" - (thoren). I often use cabbage thoren as a substitute for rice for myself (my kids still eat lots of rice though). I have also thickened up some of the curries I make. So now instead of using 1/2 cup of toor dahl in my sambar recipe, I use a full cup. This allows me to eat it like a stew rather than feel the need to pour it on top of rice. So now I would have a bowl of this (higher protein sambar) add a diced boiled egg and have a pappadum and a little pickle on the side. I might have a little chapatti (i.e. a quarter of one) or 1/2 idly after I have finished the bowl if I'm really craving it.
I have also substituted oat bran for some or all of the flour in various recipes. This does not cut out the carb but increases the fibre and it does not spike the blood sugar as much.
another trick is to eat all the non-carb items on my plate first and save the carb for closer to the end... in other words almost treating it like dessert. Since it's the last thing I eat I kind of feel like I had more than I really did. This works best if you eat the meal slowly, which I don't always do.0
