Eating my emotions

I just found myself in the kitchen at work eating a bit of a danish. I have been pretty steadfast about avoiding all of the sweets in the kitchen for the past 4 months so I was really confused about how I got there. Then, I took a few minutes to really think about it, and I realized that I was stressed because I had just had to give feedback on some poor performance, and that was actually what I was trying to fix. Now, I am not happy that I ate the bit of danish but what I can take from this is that for maybe, the first time in my life, I took a second and figured out why I have sugar and apple in my teeth. I have always been an emotional eater and hopefully this will help me in the future to stop and think before I eat.

I think the self awareness improvement through this process is one of the least talked about benefits. Recognizing the pull, even if you do not resist it, helps so much the next time it pulls. Giving myself a break and not beating myself up for lapses is another huge adjustment that I struggle with.

    Congrats!

And, to slightly misquote Homer Simpson:

    Mmmmm . . . . Danish!

Mindfulness and awareness are SO helpful in unraveling our complex (and sometimes unconscious) ways of relating to food. Good for you for taking the time to examine what was happening for you-- and good for you for only eating a bit--- could have been far worse. And how courageous of you to share your challenge with others-- I eat emotionally sometimes, too-- so good to know I am not alone. :)

Mindfulness in life as a general rule is always wise. I have learned to ask myself what is it I am feeding. My stomach or my mind. The mind can be the great deceiver in our life if not properly trained. Been on the roller coasters and decided to enjoy the smoothness of the still waters of the lake. Mindfulness is being present in the moment right now and not allowing anything or anyone in to create your day. You are the one who is the Director of your life no outside influences except those you want!

I was pretty stressed myself last night. Something kept telling me I wanted chocolate. I listened to 80s music and pretended i was a kid again instead.
