Suddenly I can eat more

Has this happened to anyone else. I am 5 weeks out and was able to eat 1/2 to 3/4 cup at a meal. Then yesterday I was suddenly able to eat more than a cupful at a time. It has scared me cause not being able to eat much has kept the food in check, but this will require more discipline. I also noticed that I got hungry both yesterday and today. I had not been hungry since the surgery. Is this just the normal progression of things?

Hi there...
Similar thing happened to me at about 6-8 weeks after surgery and definitely experience the hunger now. Sipping on water most of the time helps with that for me.
I find that I still eat a lot less than most people but I definitely have to consciously eat really slow and stop to think whether I am feel often otherwise I will keep eating.
Not sure whether my experience reflects others though...0 -
Are you foods soft or liquid. They do not stay with you very long, since your stomach is now like a drain, even if it contains high protein. Try solid lean meats, if able to, depending stage you are in. Once I got in the solid stage that helped me a lot. liquids just go through. Though trying to get all my liquids and food(calories) is very hard now. I was nervous at first also, because I heard all these people saying they had to remind themselves to eat and here I was always hungry! But now that I am on solids makes a world difference. Just remember everyone is different!0

Really depends on the food and your Sleeve. I am 2 yrs out and some days I just can't tolerate much, while other days (don't be scared) I can eat almost anything (and lots of it!).
Give it some time. Tomorrow could be a totally different story. Just try not to push your new tummy to the limits. Remember that portion control is up to you, not your Sleeve.
Congrats!!

I just started being able to eat a reg diet. No more mushie or soft foods. Thanks for the answers just have to start being more careful. Wasn't hard before not to eat the wrong things since I wasn't hungry, but now have to be more aware I guess.0

I was so scared to try new things once I hit the regular foods. I quickly became excited to see what I could eat and how much (ohhh some nasty lessons learned there...). It will smooth out soon.
BTW I never lost my hunger sensation, as they promise. I really wish I did. But it just makes me work harder.
Good Luck!0 -
I agree! I am over a year out and have not lost that hungry sensation that a lot fo people told me they didn't have. Most days aren't too bad, but as it turns out, today isn't one of them. I feel like I could keep eating, so I am concentrating on drinking!
Good luck and hang in there!0 -
That was about the time I started getting hungry a lot. About an hour after I'd eat, my stomach acid would build up making me feel really, REALLY, hungry. Antacids help.
I'm about 2 years out from VSG. How much I can eat and how full something makes me feel does vary. I can eat 2 cups of salad and want more...but one softboiled egg and half a slice of wheat toast can make me feel over stuffed.0 -
You are not alone. This is why they tell us it is just a tool. We still have to watch what we eat, how we eat it, and portions. It's all discovering what you body needs.
This was a very important time for me to measure and log everything. After three years of measuring, logging, and exercise, I'm starting to feel like I have a handle on this, but I'm still afraid I'm going to blow it.0 -
Im 2.5 years out and can eat masses! I've brought it up with my surgeon since my 6 month check up and he just shrugs his shoulders lol...thanks! So yeah, dieting is still very much a part of my life but the sleeve helps0

I agree with this completely. I can eat larger quantities of certain foods (not just the typical 'slider' foods), but the dense proteins (eggs, chicken/beef, cheese) still fill me up very quickly. I still can't eat rice at all, but I can eat some bread (usually I have my sandwiches open-faced) and some pasta (no more than a 1/4 cup serving at any meal). I find myself able to eat a 'normal,' balanced meal though - like 3-4 oz of protein, a small serving of carbs and a small serving of veggies or salad. I love my sleeve!!0
