HELP!

I'm really ashamed. I went over my calories by over 1000 yesterday. I can do okay most of the time but when there's a picnic or social function involved all hell breaks loose. What's worse, I went tover on Memorial day too... probably by 1000- 1500. I was so ashamed I stopped logging.
Perhaps I ought to avoid social functions all together for the next year. I mean, what's more important? My wedding or bbq? I really have to keep this in perspective.
This is no joke. I will not be a beached bride whale. I must lose at least 30# by next May or I will hate myself. I'm not spending 10 glorious days in Jamaica with the love of my life preoccupied by how nasty I look in swim wear.

Does anyone have any advice??

I'm sorry, I wish I could offer any proper fixing advice...but I'm so new at this I don't know much :(
But I do know that there are always days when we **** up. I **** up my diet at least once a week! Sometimes by a lot, sometimes by a little. But the thing is that you just don't give up and don't wallow in it and just keep going and let that be motivation to do better the next meal.
Your willingness to skip social functions for a year seems a bit telling. Are you nervous in social settings? Maybe that's why you overeat at parties. Maybe think ahead and choose something non-food related to do when you're feeling insecure (like going out for a cigarette, go to the bathroom, text someone, etc.) and that might help.
    Anyways, best of luck :)

Don't feel like you have to stop going to functions or that going over once is a deal-breaker. Sure it's a lot of calories to go over but this is the beginning of your journey. And part of this entails learning new habits.

You know where your weakness is, now use that as part of your mental arsenal to be diligent when you're out. Keep being social but make different choices. It's all a part of the learning curve!

Also- we all have days where you forego a healthy meal and get a whopper and a poutine so don't punish yourself like you're the only person who has done this.

Just keep moving forward and know that as you go, this is easier as healthy choices become second nature to you!

Hi there! Don't feel so discouraged! We all slip up from time to time. I have been on this site for almost a year and in the first 5 months I had lost 22 lbs (most of which was in the first 3 months) after 3 months it got much harder to continue to lose weight which is always discouraging. I ended up joining a 12 wk challenge and lost 8 lbs in that which put me up to my 22 lb lost. However, to be perfectly honest with you it gets hard to be on a deficit for that long and I started to eat more at maintenance and less days at deficit and ultimately decided to take a month break after a month of no MFP and logging I feel revived and ready to start a new challenge with renewed motivation and willingness :) A few things that have helped me along the way: the longer you are on a reduced calorie diet the easier it becomes to not overeat so much - and what I mean by that is your stomach shrinks and I feel full faster so even though I can still easily go over my daily calories I am less likely to go over by a lot. some tricks I've learned to help feel full on fewer calories include eating better snacks. veggies with a nutritious low cal dip can be really tasty and fills you up! I'll eat carrot sticks, cucumber sticks, zucchini, bell peppers strips and dip them in low fat/low cal yogurt dip or flavored hummus. I also really like fruit and summer is a great time to enjoy it! I also still treat myself so I don't feel deprived I try to find low cal sweets to eat - right now popsicles are my favorite! I get either the fruit bars that are only 80 cals a bar or the fugde pops that are 40 cals a bar that way I can have a delicious sweet that really is minimal in terms of calories. Another thing I have found to help is whenever I am hungry or think I am hungry I drink a glass of water and then wait 10-15 mins, if I am still hungry after that I will eat a snack but I have found that 50% of the time I was just thirsty. This little trick helps in two ways ... it helps to keep my water intake up and helps to keep me from eating more. One other thing I do from time to time is fast - I'm not talking about continually starving yourself, but if I find I have been eating too much I might pick one day to fast and only drink water and then the following days my appetite is a lot smaller I feel like it helps jump start my diet when it gets off track and also there have been studies that suggest intermittent fasting has other beneficial heath advantages.

I hope this helps! Stay encouraged :)

Don't beat yourself up! Everyone messes up every once in while. You don't have to become a hermit to reach your goals, in fact what are you working towards if you can't enjoy the ride??? If you are going to an outing, make sure you eat something healthy right before the event. That will stave off a little hunger when you get there. If you have to pack your own snacks/condiments to keep your calories down then do what you have to do. Otherwise, just take inventory of all your options and really choose what you think is worth for the moment. Like I will NEVER turn down a grilled burger, why? Because I can't get that everyday! Grilled chicken is a great option too, just rip the skin off before you chow down. And bring your own water if need be. Other than that, my advice is enjoy yourself and just learn from your mistakes.
