tl;dr
MyFitnessPal uses the answers you give in your diet profile to estimate your daily burn (y). Every time you sync your band, UP sends your total burn to MFP. MFP uses the information from UP to predict your burn for the entire day (x). If x is greater than y (or if you have negative adjustments enabled in your MFP diary settings), then your adjustment equals x minus y.
