free weights vs resistance

what does everyone prefer? I used free weights and barbells to gain muscle but went too far and ended up bulking up. In an effort to get back to my former size i'm using resistance machines , low weight higher reps etc but what are you doing to get to the size you want? I'm interested to know your views.
Oh and feel free to add if you're looking for motivation and support.

I prefer everything!
Barbell, dumbbells, plate loaded machines, traditional machines, cable machines, bodyweight exercises.....
I tend to train in a high tempo style as well and don't want to be hanging around waiting for one piece of equipment.
I've been doing this stuff too long (since 1974 I guess?) to be restricted to a set routine.
But eating the right amount makes the biggest difference to being the right size.0 -

I did yes. to be honest it may well be that I end up mixing it all up a little. like
sijomial says, its a bit of a bind waiting for people to finish using the machines etc

Free Weights and resistance have about the same effectiveness IMHO as long as the intensity is the same so a 100kg barbell for squats may have the difficulty if you used a pulley cable leg press which is topped to 130kg etc. To build muscle in general, any type can build muscle but mixture of both is good - also to the 2nd Qs, unless your completely new, bulking up (so gaining moderate weight in general) is the way to go in building muscle.
Low weight high reps is not an effective muscle building platform (assuming high reps = 20+ reps) - 6-12 reps of heavy to moderate weight will build muscle the quickest and increase strength.
I'm currently on a cut and hitting fairly heavy 4-6 reps/set at the start of my workouts and gradually drop to moderate weights and hit 7-15 reps (but bare in mind I believe in high volume so do ~20-30 sets per workout).
Hope this helps!0 -
