First, apologies if this is a dupe.

I have a Surge and I use MFP. I have my daily calorie goal set to 1,700 in MFP. I've noticed that when I get up in the AM and sync my Surge, it has taken available calories away in the exercise portion of MFP. It will say something like "Fitbit measured activity -156." Then I'm down to 1,544 available and I didn't even eat anything yet.

Anyone know why it does this ?

    Yep. It's perfectly normal.

I recommend you read the FAQ that heybales wrote. You'll find it in the stickies for the group.

As you get up and are as active as - or more active than - you told MFP you would be, that number will gradually change from negative to positive.

Basically, FitBit has only awarded you a calorie burn at your BMR rate when you get up in the morning. So, not that many. MFP assumes that your expected calorie burn is evenly distributed over 24 hours (yeah, not realistic, but easy to calculate). So, when you wake up, you're behind and it takes away calories. If you spent the day in bed, that would be appropriate (and you'd continue losing calories) because you're not being as active as expected. Mine always starts negative and always turns positive sometime during the morning.

OK, thanks. Yeah, mine is usually positive by the time I get to the gym in the morning. I just wasn't sure why it started negative.

    Thx again
