I would never bother with a chest-strap in a pool and I've heard that the Finis earpiece HRM isn't so great (thanks, fishgutzy). I came across this item in development on a website that looks interesting so I think I will try it out when it becomes available.

I have no affiliation with this company and, to be frank, I'm always concerned about how long electronics will last, particularly novel uses of electronics, and especially concerned about the compatibility of electronics and water.

They won't work with my favorite 'goggles', which are actually a small mask (Aqua Sphere Vista Mask), but the manufacturer said they will work with the aquasphere kayenne, the speedo biofuse, the tyr nest pro, or the finis goggles. So I will try some of these, and if they work well, then I will add this instabeat HRM/lap-counter and report back.

Any 'automatic' lap counter will have the same problem they all have. Won't count kick board laps and will miss counting a lap if one's push off is to short.

Personally, I don't care about counting kick-board laps; I just need help keeping track of longer distances when I get distracted or want to think about something else.

What do you mean by 'push off too short'? I occasionally miss a flip-turn and get little or no kick off the wall. Is that the kind of thing you're talking about? Thanks!

A triathlete I worked with uses the Gamin. He pushes off the wall when training instead of flip turn. He fund that many times the garmin did not count a lap because he did not glide long enough when he pushed off the wall. The Garmin takes that pause in movement as a turn. If the pause is not long enough it does not register.
I use a digital click counter. Sure beats tracking laps mentally. I doubt I could track laps without when I swim 10km in the pool. 220 laps. :)

I thought about getting one of those, but the HRM on this one was attractive. When I first started looking at this, I was concerned about my heart rate being too high. Now I'm not so concerned so hearing that the lap-counter is not always so accurate is making me rethink this.

When you use a manual lap-counter, do you ever forget to click the lap? If so, does this happen frequently?

Whenever I'm not sure about my lap-number, I always bite the bullet and use the lower number. I figure that is a good incentive to make sure I'm more attentive going forward. If I took the higher number, I think my body and brain would increasingly conspire against me by more frequently confusing me with higher numbers.

The only click error I do occasionally is click at the wrong end so I just skip the click at the start end. This happens maybe once every 1000 laps or so.
Didn't happen at all during my last 10km swim. 220 laps.
My next distance challenge is 10 mile, 352 laps. I want to do that by the end of summer.
This is the one I use.

That instabeat looks very interesting. And the idea of having visual colour references during the swim is fascinating.
I would really appreciate HRM monitoring when I do my swim sprints.
The only tricky thing I see is that my current MP3 player (finis Neptune) also mounts on my goggle straps, so I would have an array of gadgets on my googles.
That would really get the people at my pool curious about all the paraphernalia I was wearing! Lol!
Then again, I don't wear my MP3 player when I'm doing sprints, so it shouldn't be a problem!

I've never had that problem . I don't listen to anything while swimming but my stroke count or my own thoughts :)
