Happy Easter all! Hope it's a blessed and joyful one.

On spring break. My goal for the week...Relax. Rejuvenate. Restore. Reconnect.

I'll do this by make smart but not obsessive food choices while keeping carbs in evening (and gluten free of course). Up my vitamin C. Get in plenty of slow movement by walking the beach or slow cruiser bike rides. Hanging with the family (obviously hubby and kiddo, but my Mom, brother and nephew also here.)

Kelly, have fun shopping for a smaller size it's a great feeling! And at the range!

The potato debate in the paleo community... Someone please correct me if me if I'm wrong since I'm lazy to google it  potato is native to South America and the native there have been cultivated potato for thousands of years and there are evidence that go back 10k years but potato is a nightshade and aren't nightshade a "no" on the paleo list?

Kim, I'd take broken bones and torn ligaments all day than have to deal with leukemia and lymphoma. Wow!
And here's to getting all your "r"

John, let us know how the date went ;)

Jen, lack of motivation is common, the key is not to give up. I'm not at my "a" game right now but I'm trying and not giving up. Even though I'm not at my pre holiday weight, my clothes still fit although there is one pair of jeans that doesn't go on as smoothly as I remembered lol so that is my point of reference. I'm also trying to eat good to set an example for Arturo since he is on the same boat as me.

We bought some A2 casein milk; small "local" farm named saint Benoit and raw cream to make us some egg nog for tonight and of course good rum I like Zacapa rum

    Explanation of A2 milk http://www.snowvillecreamery.com/a1-and-a2-beta-casein-in-cow-milk.html

Oh and I also bought some sheep's milk since I don't do well with cow milk but I can tolerate the A2 milk better. The A2 milk wasn't marketed as that. But I emailed the creamery and they told me they can't guarantee all their cows are A2 but they did test their foundation herd and they are A2 so that's good enough for, plus the fact that their whole herd is jersey cows. If you guys can, try jersey cow milk (and sheep's milk! Higher protein and fat than conventional milk) it had a higher butterfat content and according to milk drinkers "no cow taste and creamier" the fact that a creamery is doing jersey cow is amazing! I've met jersey cows and they are much smaller, very curious and has those soft doe eyes. So, I tasted the milk and I was looking at this beautiful cow and I remembered thinking, with milk that good you must taste fantastic.

Paleo technically says white potatoes are a no. They are considered a nightshade but then no are tomatoes and you find the occasional recipe with those as well. But mark and I do occasionally fudge that rule as long as we are having a high activity day like yesterday's match. On average though I avoid white potatoes due to the worn out feeling I get afterwards.

I am having fun with the smaller clothes. Not sure how much I will continue to lose. So I will boost my wardrobe as my size stabilizes. My treat for myself was to upgrade my Fitbit flex to a charge. Really enjoying the difference and increased capabilities! Gave my mom the flex along with all the fashion bands I bought and she is thrilled!

Getting ready for our fancy dinner tonight. My dad has been cooking a prime rib and I have the potatoes going now. Only sad parts were that mark and my oldest son, Casey, couldn't come due to work. But I shall have leftovers for both when I see them!

Hope everyone has a wonderful Easter!
  • Hey everybody. Sorry, haven't been very active the past few days. Must stop that! I like it here and I'm not going to leave.

I hope everybody had a nice Easter. Kim, I'm heading to Florida (Tampa/St. Pete area) next Thursday for the weekend. Looking forward to some time away from home. One thing I know I'll be doing is eating some seafood. :yum:

Thank you Heron. I'm really in a rut (AGAIN). I'm hoping getting away for the weekend will rejuvenate me. I know I need to get my walking in or else I'll fail miserable at the Vegas TM (and I can't have Carol and John holding THAT over me - hehehe).

Have a great rest of the day. Tomorrow is the start of the work week (well, I guess not for Kim - lucky girl) :sunglasses:

Jealous of your Spring Break Kim!! Jen, the lack of motivation had to hit sometime. We were beginning to wonder if you were human. It is nice to know you're just like the rest of us. I love it here too... motivation is a huge issue for me and there is no better place to borrow some. ;)

Can anyone else do Tough Mudder Chicago on May 9th?? We have a 20% off discount if you can. At least come watch!! (thank you again for coming Jen! )

Had a great Easter. Hope yall did too!

Happy Monday Folks! Interesting weekend here. The Saturday date went well. Did the Farmers Market, (I got some great grass fed pork) Diane doesn't own a car and she had been talking about here garden and stuff she needed for it so off we went to the garden shops, We tried Home Depot first but were disappointed in the selection so off we went to one of the local Shops that Zena used to use with her clients. Bingo! as I told her if they don't have ti then you probably can;t get it on Savannah. Dropped her off with her load of goodies and tentatively made plans for this coming weekend. See how it goes. Nice gal.

Easter Morn did a 6 mi walk with Daniel and JT Dogg at the local nature trail. Then spent the day getting new house plants and potting some of them up, getting plant hangers in etc. In these last few years I have gotten pretty good with propagating and caring for Aloe plants and some ornamental cacti. So got some Mothers-in-law tongue, a spider plant, a Boston fern, a couple palm trees, and assortment of others. all are good O2 generators and some all have various cleaning purifier properties according to NASA. It remains to be seen as to weather I've brought them to a food rich environment for their toxin and CO2 hungers or a cycle of abuse and slow painful death. We'll see how it goes.

On the other hand my outdoors garden pots are all doing well. Cabbage plants are growing like crazy may have to get some more pots for them. Tomato and pepper are both doing fine as well.

Yesterday was a 10 mi day and HRV was in the green this morning so feeling good about the distance element of TM. Will know Tues if I can get away for Chicago TM.

Heron - Will be very Koo-EL to see you guys in Vegas. Hope all si going well with your rescues. How is the Water restriction affecting your garden?

Kim 4R's is very Koo-EL enjoy!

Jen, Carol, Heron et al, Some motivation -- You all know the work I do, Here are a couple of common things you may want to spend some time contemplating on and even discussing with your loved ones.

It's almost a universal thought from Hospice Patients that their life regrets are that they worked too hard and did not spend enough time with those that they loved, and did not tell them how they feel often enough.

My observation - Stems from both my Dad and my patients, When you stop moving you start dieing. Do you want to live, do you want quality of life when you are my age and older? Get the F**& up and MOVE and DO IT NOW!

Have a great day folks, and on the potato debate paleo shmaleo eat em the night before a heavy exercise session. lots o butter/ghee and enjoy them,

    Have a great day Folks!

My frigging computer just deleted my very nice post before I was done and has angered me :s

On the paleo potato debate - nothing to do with nightshades unless you are AIP (autoimmune protocol). Otherwise, nightshades are fine on paleo (eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, etc). If you're AIP you would also be avoiding nuts and seeds, eggs (esp the whites), chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and maybe more things I can't think of now.

Now I subscribe to treat them as carbs, just butternut squash. (So Kelly the range TOTALLY counts as needing carbs!) And when my hubby had KD last week I made some boiled potatoes to eat with ghee and salt and get my own "comfort food"... but thankfully the kind you really don't want very much of (cause you know 1/2 box of KD is nothing but a craving maker!)

John - amazing gardening! I hope to have 5-7 veggies growing on our property this year. I can do green beans (let's not do the paleo debate on this ;) ) and will need luck and prayers for much else! My mom got me a spiralizer for Easter and some green bean seeds and I squealed with delight! But this gardening talk depends on winter every ending up north! We got about 3-4 inches today and there is so much snow left to melt! (I live in northern Ontario Canada- north of Toronto).

I will be cheering you all on in spirit in May for Tough Mudder :D No way can I make any US trips this year, as we moved last year and I just started a new job last month.

Hmr you are right about your observation! My dad has copd and was diagnosed several years ago. He chose to confine himself to his home and stop being active. As a result, and along with his illness, he is able to do less all the time and of course depression rules his day along with the daily stress this brings my mom having to do so much more.

Congratulations on your date! Hopefully things will continue to go well and you two can have some terrific outings! Dating scares me lol. The last time I plucked up the courage I got to reconnect with mark. We had known each other vaguely several years ago through our boys's activities. That made it easier!

Can't wait to return to work today and get back walking. 3 days of rain and gloom took its toll on me between general mood and activity level. But the forecast is sunny and 50 today! Even get to wear a new belt today and tuck my clothes in (a first at work as I am self conscious about my midsection) but I am trying and would appreciate any recommendations for exercises I could do at home to tone up my mid section.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!
  • Good morning.
    That is all.

Kelly: I don't know of any exercises that reduce a particular area. My understanding that fat loss works as an overall thing and there are certain strength training exercises that will build in town certain areas to make a shift in body appearance. So while we're whittling away our fat, we should be toning up our shoulders and back if we went to waist to appear smaller for example. The butt is an area I hear about a lot in terms of how you can shape it with particular exercises. But I pay little attention to all of this because there's only been one time in my adult life where my body fat was low enough to concentrate on reshaping.

I see a lot on the Internet about reducing belly fat… Does anybody know anything about the validity of this? It never used to be a problem area of mine but things are settling in my midsection and so I'd love to know what you guys know also.

Angela, I can't believe it still snowing there. I feel like spring just ended here we hit 88° yesterday. That's actually very mild and cool compared to what it should be like in a couple of months.

My activity level is very very low. I'm worried about Tough mudder Chicago. I'm getting out for a 4 mile walk occasionally but I'm having to take off a couple of days from work to just get my graduate work and my certification summaries written. I'll be doing a couple of 5K with the kids soon... It's one of the only ways to get in some activity and not take time from them.

Day 15 of whole 30. I'm eating very clean but I'm pigging out on clean food. I feel better but I don't think I'm losing much weight.

I'm super excited that John is going to be doing Chicago with us! If anybody else can come we love to have you. Tough Mudder just gave us a 20% off coupon for folks who run Chicago on our team. But you need a discount code when you check out and I'm getting that now. We have a 10% off for Las Vegas… What are you waiting for????

Heron: i'm super excited we're going to get to meet you and Arturo! Thanks for coming to Vegas!!

Rae & Stacy were on last week's thread. I hope they pop up this week. Been too long!

    Have a great Wednesday everybody!!!

    Happy Wednesday folks!

Yep I'm in for TM Chicago. Not really in shape for it either Carol but we will get through it as a Team. May just surprise yourself. Any body else here gonna come join us and Jen? Looks like I may have some of my family as a Peanut Gallery as well. No matter what we gonna JAM!

Same here on the Whole 30, lost a bit of my Tobacco Free weight gain but I did manage to hold the line at about 20lbs gained so that's better than the last time I tried it.

Kelley -As for Targeted Fat Loss, Not aware of any non surgical solution, though there are some Laser and spot Thermogenesis (Cold/Hot/Cold) stuff that may be effective, if I remember right on what I heard about them the research is not all in yet.
What I know now is build more muscle, burn more fat, eat whole foods. target carbs for evening (mostly). Move every day (8-10K steps), lift heavy 2Xwk and challenge yourself with a good sprint or intense activity every week or two. Have fun while you do all that and it will work even better. Rethink of it as Practice for Fun, instead of working out.

    Good morning Jen!

Well, have a great day folks!

John, yes California is in a historic drought :( we did not get the much needed snow melts melts this winter as well. Farms will be hurting. The water restriction won't hurt us since all they are doing is raise prices if you go pass a certain number. Which I think is total BS!!! We have been doing our part in water conservation since before this whole drought business. And if I don't reduce my water usage my rates will go up?! Then there are those people who power wash their driveways, have lawns, and waste water, for them all they have to do is the bare minimum to cut back on water. I'm from Singapore where water is precious. We get rain but the country is so small we can't store it. So we buy water from Malaysia. In addition to oil pipelines, we have water pipelines. And the government do water ration drills regularly. I mean they actually cut the whole country's water off. Unless water stop coming out of faucet, I think most people just don't know how bad the situation is. The west coast is literally draining the Colorado river. Sad!! Oh and every fire season there is always an idiot who throws a cigarette butt, and there goes acres of forests and we need trees roots to hold soil to hold water...
California is so beautiful and people are just taking it for granted and ruining it.

Ahh, the dreaded belly fat... I read that where your body decides to store fat had to do with hormones. That's why a lot of women's' body starts to change as we age. Due to the change in estrogen and testosterone, the fat get redistributed.
Also if you have a c section scar, you will always have a pouch.
I think the best ab exercise is planks and side Planks. It works the whole core pulling in the muscles also the lying on your back raise both leg extended about 6-8inches of the ground and hold is also great. I have to say during my yoga phase I can see a difference in my body. Hmmm maybe I should get back to yoga,

I guess I phrased it a bit wrong. The fat I know will go with time or stay and either way I can live with it. It also runs in my family to have a pouch lol! Had it for 20 years and am used to it. It is more about wanting to strengthen those muscles in that section to help my back and posture. So thank you for the suggested exercises because that is what I am looking for and any more I would love to work into my daily routine.

I am more active now then I ever imagined possible. A low day is 12,000 steps and I am eating right and really enjoying how much better I feel. The size loss etc is just an added bonus!
  • John, I hope your family can come hang out and watch the craziness in May. I still need to see if Kris and Kim are going to come watch with me. ; )

It's Thursday! Florida bound in about 14 hours! :sunglasses:

    Happy Thursday Folks.

Kelley - Here is a link to the Fitdeck Body Weight cards, I also like the Cross Training Deck for whole body compound movement exercises as well. You can use these in so many ways and they give you good form advice along with pretty reasonable rep schemes.

Jen - Have Fun in Florida! Wave as you go by.

Heron - Yoga or Tai Chi (my pref) is always a good thing.
  • Will do John.

Kelly, try those planks. and there are variations of planks that makes it harder or easier. If you have a wrist there are ways around it as well.

I'm making empanadas, chicken puffs and berry turnovers with a friend tomorrow. So I'll be busy doing all the prep today. I'll make a tradition 64 fold puff pastry dough today and I'll show her how to make a rough puff dough tomorrow. Arturo is looking forward to it lol. So am I, I don't make puff pastry often but when I do, I like to make a batch and freeze it.

The husky with a broken leg that I mentioned a couple of weeks just got dropped back off at the hospital :'( . The good Samaritan can't handle it, apparently the husky broke out of the crate and refused food. So something happened.....Well, we will be fostering her. I think people underestimate the difficulties of caring for a post op dog especially if its not yours.

Good Friday!~ Just a quick note... after my complaining about the snow we are getting lots of rain today. That's good. I had to take out the recycling and compost for pick up and our driveway is about 100m long. So I'm walking as fast as I can seeing as the compost weighs about 30 lbs (no joking! missed last week!), and as I approach the end of the driveway the rain of course comes down heavier. So I drop it off and try to sprint back home...*try* being the word. I was huffing and puffing and needed my inhaler once I was inside! I used to run 5km regularly... so I guess working out again, including some sprinting is order! LOL hears for trying new things. And another reason to stick to my whole30 ;)
  • Happy Friday!!! Just having some breakfast before heading out of Orlando to the Gulf Coast. Wow, wasn't ready for the humidity. Jeez I was wearing a winter coat two weeks ago. :)

Angela, maybe you can add "driveway sprinting " to your routine ;) I bet just once a day can make a difference.
Had a great time catching up with a friend today we spend the day making empanadas (beef and chicken,) white chocolate macadamia nuts cookies, chicken pot pie in puff pastry and mix berry turnovers. By the way homemade puff pastry totally worth it! It's actually easy, just time

When my flour is all used up I'm gonna try that then, I'm going to try other brands. I just realized that I enjoy baking which sucks for someone on low carb lol. I love the science of baking and how each batch of dough is different and you really need have a feel for it. Also the taste of freshly baked goods or pasta from scratch is amazing!
John sound like a fun night ;)
