Strength Training Questions

I have read sooo many articles on strength training and they can be confusing and conflicting! I want to build muscle and tone up --- so would a combination help me the most? As in, high reps and low weights certain days and then increased weights with lower reps other days? Does it help or hurt to split up the workouts (upper body one day and lower body another day)? Thanks!
