Good morning everyone!
I love to spend time immersed in the things I'm passionate about. I'm always looking, experimenting and questioning. Sometimes, I get to experience mind blowing information.... And I just feel the need to shout it from the rooftops :)
Excuse my informal and unorganized presentation....
John Meyer from Stanford University conducted several studies trying to determine the best indicators for longevity. The HCL didn't make the list, neither did blood pressure and pretty much most test that are routinely done by physicians have failed to pass the statistical significance barrier.
Without further ado here are the top 3 indicators for longevity:
1. Leg strenght
2. VO2 max
3. Amount of leanbodymass

This is crazy...right? We hear so much about preserving muscle, growing muscle and all the other fitness slogans but we don't really understand the reasoning behind it.
To put it simply, protein and specifically the amino acids in protein, are the building blocks for everything in our bodies. Our bodies store carbs and fat but we can't really store protein. The only place where we store extra amino acids is in muscle. When ever something in our body needs repairs or building, the body will try and get what's available from our daily diet and then it will tap into the amino acids stored in muscle.
Think of muscle as a storage of amino acids, it's the body's pharmacy. That's why leg strength ( largest muscles in the human body) is #1 indicator of longevity.
We don't need big muscles for esthetics, we need lots of muscle mass as inner health insurance.
The VO2 max is directly correlated to the the heart functions and capacity and will be improved with physical activity.
The amount of lean body mass is relevant because it shows the amount of balance in one's body.

So here you have it folks, some reasons why exercise is will help us live longer.
No, we can't cheat this and workout like crazy for a few days and then pass out for a month. These parameters take serious time to improve and a dedicated effort. The best lesson to take away from this is that we need to be active for life, find something we enjoy, something sustainable and just do it.
Building muscle is extremely hard and taxing on our bodies so let's take care of what we have!!!
Have a fabulous day everyone!

Just another reason why exercise is so important. Strength and fitness are key to our health. Today is my rest and relax day, getting ready for the week ahead. My fitness class restarts on Tuesday and thankfully my outdoor boot camp resumes in May. Love when we get back outside.

    Have a lovely Sunday everyone.
