Hello USNC members,
In order to effectively support you with your fitness and performance goals outside of the studio, I will be posting nutrition related content on the Myfitnesspal group forum regularly. Although physical activity plays an important role for weight loss, what you decide to eat is the most significant factor. You've probably heard this from me before but I'll say it again:
This is a common saying among health and fitness professionals and is based on the principles of caloric balance. Simply put, if you're consuming more calories than you are expending during physical activity then you will gain weight. As many of you have noticed from your conditioning day reports, 200 to 350 calories seems to be the average range of calories burned during training. All of the sweat and hard work can be easily thrown down the drain with one bad meal. So as your trainer it is my duty to educate, motivate and inspire every USNC member into not only training smarter but also eating smarter.
A good majority of the posts will be based on scientific research and best practices endorsed by nutrition experts. My posts will be divided into three main categories: strategies, rules and menu.
Strategies are about changing your mindset and reinforcing desirable behavior for the long term. Some you may find more effective than others. There's a saying from Bruce Lee that served as the basis for his philosophy on martial arts:
Because your are a unique individual, what may work for you may not work for others. But before you decide to discard a strategy, I ask that you put 100% of your effort into it for at least a complete training cycle. See if it works for you. Don't disregard it because it appears too challenging, tedious or unrealistic. You may never know until you've tested it out over time. Because I believe what you eat should be tailored to each individual, the strategies I will be sharing with you can be applied to just about anyone whether they are a vegetarian, vegan or follow the Paleo diet.
However, this doesn't mean you can simply eat whatever you want with no limitation to portion size. There are certain food "rules" to follow to ensure you are receiving the proper nutrition your body needs and that your body composition improves. Are you hydrated? Eating enough meals throughout the day? Do you need supplements? These questions will be answered. In addition, you will learn more about macronutrients, micronutrients, vitamins, minerals and more.
And to tie both strategy and rules together, I will be sharing recipes and food recommendations with a menu post. Just because you have decided to eat healthier doesn't necessarily mean your food won't taste good. And for those of you who tend to eat out often, I will be offering suggestions on where to purchase that quick meal when you don't feel like cooking or are on the run.
It is my hope that my posts might spark dialogue and participation amongst you. This is one of the reasons why I am using the Myfitnesspal forum. I am giving you the opportunity to respond and share (thoughts, concerns and even recipes) with the rest of the group. If you are currently using Myfitnesspal to journal your diet and are experiencing results, then please continue to do so. Since I can monitor your eating habits, I can make suggestions on how to improve your nutrition for you as an individual. For those who haven't, please pay special attention to my posts. At the very least you can participate by staying active in the forums and supporting your fellow members with their success' and struggles. As your trainer, I can only show you the "door" to a healthier you. It's up to you to walk through it.
Thanks and I'll see you on the mats.
Train hard. Train smart.

You can't out-exercise a bad diet!
