Hi all

I'm planning on starting next week Monday and training 3x a week. Is it detrimental to gains to add in other exercises? I love lunges, glute bridge and leg presses, is it ok to add or not? Does it help with gains or a waste of time? I wanted to do the 3exercises first then add leg presses and glute bridges once done....

Please advise...

You don't have to add accessories but you can if you want and it's certainly not detrimental unless you're overdoing it. I usually add in some accessory work to make the training more varied and work specific areas. I usually lower the weight and up the reps (3x8 or more) on accessories.

You mention gains so if you're trying to gain muscle, how you eat is more important than accessory work. Eat at maintenance or a surplus and ensure you're getting enough protein and carbs.
  • Hi, and welcome --

I'd also suggest you take a look at some of the other threads in the group -- there are at least two about accessory routines that might be helpful for you.

    Good luck!

you can pretty much do anything that you like. the sl website is really prescriptive in tone, but i think that's more because the dipshit who runs it has prescriptive personality disorder, myself. in other words, he's the type of bossy little fascist who'd try to tell you how to brush your teeth and organize all the stuff in your fridge if you let him into your house.

do the workouts themselves as described, is my advice. and then anything past that is completely your call. do the other stuff as/when/if you feel like it. if it doesn't work out for you in terms of giving you the results that you want, then adjust. the main thing is to get started, and it looks like you've got that part of it covered. i think everyone here has worked out their own little customizations and tweaks on the way.
