Have I Gained Muscle or Fat?

Hi. I had lost all my excess weight by July of last year. Since then I am up about four pounds. I have assumed it is fat, since over the holidays, etc. I did eat more. But how do I know for sure? Maybe I've actually gained muscle, since I wasn't eating at a deficit anymore?

Hard to tell, impossible for us to tell from your description. How do your clothes fit, are they still fitting the same? Muscle will add weight without adding inches (at least at first), but even if the clothes are a touch tighter it could be water weight accounting for just a few pounds gained as you're describing.

Yes, I know it is hard for anyone to say. I would like it to be muscle, but as I said I did do some overeating during these past few months, so it's probably fat. My clothes still fit, thank God, but may be tighter in the thighs.

Have you been following a good, progressive lifting program? If so then some of it is probably muscle at least. If not then...nope.

I've been doing Stronglifts for close to two years, but have not progressed much recently due to having to miss a lot of workouts due to lack of time. I also do extra exercises for my triceps, biceps, back, shoulders, legs, and stomach. I also walk pretty much every day.
