Fitbit One showing too many steps

I just bought a fitbit one a couple of days ago. In those two days, it's recorded almost double the number of steps my old pedometer would normally record on an average day. I haven't been more active than usual, so I have to believe that the fitbit is way off. I could understand a slight discrepancy, but this seems crazy. Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to correct it?

Make sure your stride length is accurate, then test it out by counting 50-100 steps. I have a Flex and it's right on for my steps.

How do you know your old pedometer was accurate?

Trust your Fitbit for several weeks, then reevaluate your progress.

I'm not positive that my old one was accurate, but it was consistent and seemed to be in line with my activity. The fitbit says I walked 2 miles in the grocery store this morning. No way that's correct.

For distance, adjust your stride: http://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/How-do-I-measure-and-adjust-my-stride-length

For steps, count off a hundred steps.

For burn, trust your Fitbit for a couple of weeks, then reevaluate your progress.
