Edema post-surgery

Developed swollen puffy feet last night. My weight had increased after surgery from all the fluids and due to a bleed at a surgical site (not the sleeve) my hematocrit dropped so they gave me two units of blood. Read that edema was not unusual so I pushed extra fluid before bed and soaked my feet in hot water and epsom salts. This morning my feet are much better and my weight has suddenly dropped nearly 10 pounds. So today I will really watch the fluid intake and get in more walking.

You get a lot of fluid while in the hospital. It can take awhile to get rid of that. Keep drinking and walking and you will keep losing.

My hands were actually scary the first few days post op- no one told me how swollen they would get! They were HUGE from the edema. Glad some of the water is coming off. Keep an eye on it but you will probably be back to normal shortly

For your legs get a pair of TED compression socks to sleep in, no prescription needed. Definitely helps. I wear compression daily for my circulation. I developed issues because the size of legs reduced so much after my VSG. Had to order a smaller size . Didn't think of that one

are you on blood pressure meds? If edema get worse please see a doctor. This is common after any surgery. Just keep an eye on it.

I didn't notice it so much post surgery, but then I've always retained water very easily, still do. My sister has chronic edema and her leg specialist told her to walk for at least 20 minutesat a time, twice a day and keep her feet elevated when sitting. So that's the advice I follow. Walking really helps move the fluid. So walk a lot as you are able and try to avoid sitting with your feet on the floor. I work at a desk and most days when I get home I'm at least a little puffy. But an hour or so in the recliner and I'm back down to normal. And I really watch the sodium.

I have not had trouble since the first week. I drank coconut water for the potassium and electrolytes and it seemed to do the trick.
