How deep do you or should you squat?

I've seen people squat so low that it looks like their butt is going to touch the ground and I know I can't get that low. Just if I happen to have to squat down, low, in daily life, my knees aren't happy about it.
Is it necessary to squat that deep?

    ^^ Yep. The squat you saw is often called ATG or @ss to ground/grass. Getting that low takes practice and flexibility and is not necessary to engage all the muscles.
