Finally, I found someone to run the right tests! Too bad I don't go back to her for three months, but the information itself is hugely valuable to me. I finally got in to see her, and after quite a bit of talking, I got the feeling she actually kind of doubts that I actually have PCOS and suspects that I may have been misdiagnosed. She didn't say it outright, but she certainly hinted at it. Either way, she finally ran the right tests -- fasting insulin, testosterone levels (total, free, % free, and SHBG), progesterone, prolactin, and more.

I got them back, and here's what they are:

Progesterone (specifically, 17 hydroxyprogesterone) - 168ng/dL (reference range - Follicular Phase: 185 ng/dL or less, Luteal Phase: 285 ng/dL or less; I'm either just about perfect or rather low, depends on exactly which phase I was in at the time)

Testosterone - 96ng/dL (ref - 14-76; rather high)

Free T - 2.24ng/dL (ref - 0.08-1.90 ng/dL; high)

Free T % - 2.36% (ref - 0.6-2.5%; high normal)

Sex Hormone Binding Globulin - 20.3nmol/L (ref - 18-144nmol/L; low normal, which is expected when T is high, since they're usually inversely proportional)

DHEA-S - 344mcg/dL (ref - 35-430mcg/dL; high normal)

Prolactin - 6.7ng/mL (ref - 2.8-29.2ng/mL; low normal)

C-Peptide - 2.8ng/mL (ref - 0.2-2.7ng/mL; just barely high; considering this is another test of insulin resistance, this doesn't surprise me, given the time I've spent with high insulin levels, I expect this to go down in the future)

Insulin (fasting) - 13.4uIU/mL (ref - 0-29.1uIU/mL; smack dab normal, and below the threshold I've come to suspect is mine for losing weight)

Glucose (fasting) - 87mg/dL (ref - 70-99mg/dL; smack dab normal, and the best I've ever had mine measured that I recall; I often used to see it in the low 90s, so 87 makes me happy)

These are all I've had tested for now. Might have more come October when I see her again. This provides me with some great information that I hadn't been able to get before, though, so I'm happy. This shows that what I'm doing is right, at least for me for blood sugar/insulin, and if I want to, I can see what's out there to reduce testosterone slightly, but I don't necessarily have to, I don't think (it might straighten itself out with time).

Why does the Dr think you may have been misdiagnosed?

Lack of cysts on the ovaries, lack of tests in general, when tests were run most were the wrong ones. My symptoms suggest that it could be a different disorder that has crossover symptoms (there are actually a few that do).

Glad to see you getting some progress, and look forward to further discussion. Your doctor won't call you to discuss the bloodwork before your next appointment?

So the "C" in PCOS is actually NOT a misnomer? I saw mention of Cushings as a PCOS-like syndrome, are there others? More importantly, if it turns out you don't have PCOS, are you going to leave us? ;)

Dragonwolf, I am glad to hear you found a doctor willing to work to see what's going on and work with your symptoms.

Were you ever given a full thyroid panel? Or full female hormone tests? I forget what it's called but could point out some irregularities.

I sometimes had multiple cysts and at other times did not. I think the low carb diet is the best treatment for this rather than birth control pills or however they treat it nowadays. Metformin?

As far as testosterone levels go I think as long as you do not have extreme facial hair issues a little bit high is not bad...build more muscle mass, excellent libido

Is your doctor treating you will anything yet? Or testing you for something else?
