Good helmet story!

I went for a 20 mile ride with a friend this weekend. He was saying when he first started riding he did not wear a helmet. He said this 70 year old man stopped him and asked why. Then told him about losing his girlfriend in a bike accident because she did not wear a helmet. My friend decided to get one after hearing that. The very next week he took a dive while on the bike path and hit a tree with his head. He was very thankful the man stopped him and took the time to school him on helmet safety. Just thought I would share in case some of you don't helmet up. Just do it!

Our area PD will actually give kids tickets for wearing helmets !!!

Each ticket is good for a free small ice cream at the local creamery. ;)

A rather ingenious way to promote bicycle safety.

I read recently that the rate of head injuries in car accidents in the US is higher than the rate of head injuries from bicycle accidents in the Netherlands.

I read recently that there is no statistical relevance between car accidents in the USA and bicycle accidents in the Netherlands. :)

I always ask the neighborhood kids where their "brain bucket" is ...and if the parent is present, share with them a smart, talented 4.0gpa 5th grader who took a spill in the sandy desert w/no helmet. He ended up losing his natural smartness & after in school a very hard D-C student. If he had had his helmet on (he had one), doctors said he wouldn't have lost any brain power.

I tell adults w/o helmets...."Thanks for not wearing a helmet." It always takes them aback... "Thank you, we could always use more donors." heh.

And then the neighbor who's hubby won't wear one....we chatted....she upped his life insurance. ;)

thanks for sharing OP, great conversation starter. :D

My helmet saved my life (or at least some serious brain damage). When I was about 18 my friend and I were on our way back home when I hit something (still have no idea what it was) and went head over handlebars at 20+ mph. Hit my head, bounced and rolled about 75 feet down the road. I jumped up, grabbed my bike and ran over to the side of the road. I blacked out for a few seconds, so they called an ambulance. EMT's showed me my helmet later and it had a huge crack up the side of it where I contacted the ground. All I ended up with was some road rash, a small bruise on my cheek, and a slight concussion.

At a cardiac conference session on heart transplants the presenter, an MD, not quite tongue in cheek bemoaned the expansion of helmet laws and the effect on donor organ availability. :# No motorcyle helmet law in AZ, wife and I call 'em "donor-cycles".

That said, have taken care of enough traumatic brain injured patients (from all causes, not just no helmet riding a bike) to never leave home without it!

Most of the greenways/multi-use paths in my area have ~3 foot tall steel bollards right in the middle of the path at one end of any bridges on the path. These bollards are there to prevent people from driving four-wheelers or golf carts across the bridges. One day last summer, my wife and I were cruising along one of these paths when a gentleman coming the opposite direction on a mountain bike had a moment of inattentiveness and rode directly into one of these bollards. No helmet, and he promptly when head first over his bars and did a forehead plant onto the concrete path. My wife, an ex EMT, helped him, talked to him a few minutes, and decided he had, at the very least, a severe concussion. The ambulance arrived shortly after. No idea what ever happened, but this could very easily have been a fatal accident for that guy.

I was racing a Criterium a about 8 weeks or so ago. I crashed busted out two teeth, broke a finger, and got stitches in my lip and chin. I also cracked my helmet during the crash. Not that I could race without a helmet as its not allowed but I am sure it saved my head. Also if you all don't know you can pass this along. If you buy a Bontrager helmet and crash in the first year and have to replace the helmet they will replace it for free.

you really aught to mention when boosting Trek (and associated companies kit) that you work for the,... declaring an interest and all that... on a couple of forums I moderate, those kind of posts are considered borderline advertising.

I dislke wearing a helmet but have so little faith in car drivers I feel I must.
Which was just as well back in May when a car driver decided to attempt to drive straight over me. Bright sunny day, eye-bleedingly bright shirt, flashing lights - so couldn't really have done more to be visible.

Impact was big enough to snap the forks off my bike and I landed on hands and head. Very obvious damage to the helmet in the area just above my temple - deformed the outer shell and compressed the shock absorbing polystyrene shell. That would have hurt a lot at the very least and quite a good chance of some significant injury.

It was only a fairly basic Bell helmet but did its job.

This is a true "helmet-as-a-hero" story: In Madison, WI a young was man biking a few years ago. Somehow, he fell off his bike and his head was run over by a truck. Miraculously, he came out of it totally okay. His savior was his bike helmet, which suffered some cracking during his "encounter" with the truck, but saved his life as he knew it!! Wow.

I hate wearing a helmet, but I refuse to bike without one. I just know better than to go without it. My brother is a paramedic/firefighter and has told me enough stories that I know better.
