I first heard about this one, ages ago, when I was dragged by a mate to compete in a very early incarnation of the "Man v Horse" - in the early days (late 1980's), it used to be Man vs Horse vs Bike - iirc the year I did it was 1988, the year before Tim Gould actually won the event, beating the horses - the event was held in the same Village as the Bog Snorkelling - they're possibly 2 of the maddest "sporting" endeavours I've heard of!
