Marathon taper... final week mileage?

Hi all!

Need some quick advice. I'm starting my marathon taper this week, and I'm wondering if my final week mileage (next week, race on the 22nd) is too high. I have 29-32 miles on my schedule (Sun 10, Mon 5, Wed 6, Thurs 3-4 in am and 3 in pm, Sat 4). I've never had a taper that wasn't super low miles due to injury, so I wonder if my final taper week is too aggressive? I'm dropping my mileage from 57 last week to ~44 this week and then ~30 next week, so it feels like a big drop, but should my mileage be even lower coming up to the race? What do your final taper weeks usually look like?

Thanks!

Carson had me drop from 60s to 42 miles the week before, then 23 the week of my full - adding the full, I ended up at 49 for the week of the full. I felt fantastic.

I always lean towards more rest. There is nothing that you are going to gain from any extra miles added into a taper. At this point, all of the hard work has been done. Your body will benefit from rest. The last two weeks before my marathon are whatever I feel like doing, always keeping in mind that the less is more approach works best for me.

On the last couple of training cycles, the mileage stepped down from the mileage of the last week with the 20-miler to the point where the mileage was approximately half of the week following the last 20 mile run week. The current schedule I am using has 3 20-milers in it, the last one is three weekends out from the goal race. The weekly mileage goes from 52, 44, 32 and finally only 22 miles the week of the marathon. The pattern of each week (intensity, type of run) looks similar during each week of the taper, just shorter.

There is such a thing as too much rest during taper. It's important to keep the legs moving, to do some faster running too. Coming off higher mileage to a weeks that are 2/3 and then less than 1/2, you will still be recovering while keeping sharp for the race. @kristinegift, if anything, I think your final week might be a little light if the 30 includes the marathon.

For my last two marathons I did 24 and 21 miles (not including marathon) the week before and I felt that I benefited from having a really good rest. My tendency (and I suspect it's the same for most people) is to feel like I am not running enough and I have to keep reminding myself that I will benefit more from the rest than the running at that point.

@CarsonRuns The 30 is just Sun-Sat, then the marathon is the following Sunday. So I'll still be getting plenty of miles in, don't worry! :]

I ended up running 39 miles instead of 44 last week after some yoga overstretched my hamstring. But after a good 5k race yesterday, I'm good to go for a 25-30 mile week and then Marathon Sunday! :) I'm figuring less is more in the case, so not stressing about getting so many miles in. Thanks for all the input, y'all!
