Week 1- Eating Healthy
Choosing healthy options when you are not preparing your own food can be very challenging. Buffet meals also contribute to additional calories that add up quickly. Here are 10 tips from the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion on eating healthy in the dinning hall.
1. Know what you’re eating
Look at the menu ahead of time and try to plan what you will eat before walking into the dining hall. This will help prevent last minute choices that may be unhealthy.
2. Enjoy your food but eat less of it
Take smaller portions and grab a smaller plate to decrease meal size when eating a meal from a buffet.
3. Make half of your grains whole grains
Look for 100% whole grain bread and oatmeal
4. Monitor liquid calories
Avoid sugary beverages such as pop, cappuccinos, energy drinks, juice, and sweetened teas
5. Try to make half of your plate fruit and veggies
6. Design your own meal
Take options from around the dining hall to make a healthier meal. Example: grab the grilled chicken and add it to a to veggies or a salad from the salad bar.
7. Slow down on the Sauces
Ask for less or put the sauce on the side. These are usually high in calories, fat, and sodium
8. Be on guard at the salad bar
This healthier option can hurt us with options such as olives, bacon bites, fried noodles, croutons, and pasta or potato salads. Salad dressings are unhealthy, like sauces, go sparingly.
9. Make dessert special
Choose a meal a day to have a sweet treat. If you are up for a big challenge, cut back to every other day.
10. Don’t linger!
The dinning hall is a great place to meet up with friends and catch up. However, avoid staying for too long and snacking long after your meal is done.
