Fitbit One calorie estimate

(I'm a newbie - be nice)

I usually hear that people think the Fitbit's calorie estimate is high, encouraging them to overeat, but at least for me, the Fitbit's calorie estimate is WAY low. I've basically never "met" my calorie goal. Ever. And I meet my other goals consistently, sometimes exceeding my step goal by a good bit.

Here's an example: Yesterday, I walked 12,469 steps, beating my "goal" by a few hundred steps. But the estimate of my calories burned is only 91% of my "goal."

Can I adjust my calorie goal? Should I just ignore it and keep on doing what I'm doing and eat calories according to some general number without reference to the "extra" calories I should get my exercise? What gives?

I just set my Fitbit goal to my MFP maintenance calories. Judge if you're doing fine by whether or not you're losing over about 4-6 weeks.

When people say that Fitbit's calorie estimate is high, they mean how many calories Fitbit thinks you've burned (and, thus, their calorie adjustment in MFP), not the calorie burn goal.

I've never touched my calorie burn goal in Fitbit and it's never changed, despite quite a lot of weight loss. I don't know how they came up with the number or what it really means. I think it gets adjusted if you go with the Premium subscription, but I get enough value from my Fitbit that I don't feel the need for that.

It used to be easy for me to achieve, but now I don't always make it. However, I don't worry about it too much although I do find it is a good goal to aim for to keep me active. The main thing is to achieve an appropriate calorie deficit.

I would recommend that you read the FAQ in the stickies, if you haven't already. Here's a handy link: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10098937/faq-syncing-logging-food-exercise-calorie-adjustments-activity-levels-accuracy/p1

Generally, the recommendation in the FAQ is to use MFP to log your food and determine how much you should eat and Fitbit to track your exercise. I find that approach works well for me.
