Gulp!
I've just singed up for my first brevet. 200k isn't record milage for me, and I've gone nearly that far unsupported, but on familiar terrain. This will be in new territory for me, and... a 22:00 start time! I have *zero* experience night riding outside of the well-lit city.
Off to ebay for a handlebar bag!

I'm planning my first night brevet this month as well... you're not doing the one here in Georgia are you?
The biggest part of the night Brevet, so I'm told by the RBA, is to discipline yourself to ride with the group. It needs to be treated more like a true Audaux ride where teamwork is the goal rather than a fast finish time. Honestly, I am looking forward to treating the ride like an Audaux ride and I'm most concerned about equipment failure versus an engine failure.
Check out the Arkel handlebar bags if you have the money. I have an Ortlieb that is really nice but the mount is not easily removed. BTW, a handlebar bag does change the steering of your bicycle so you'll need to ride some before the brevet to get used to the bag.
Above all else, have fun on the ride!0 -
No, I'm riding the New Jersey "Shore By Night".
Thanks for the heads up on holding the group. I'm actually fortune to have some free time between now and the ride, and might try to pre-run the route during daylight.
Thanks too for the call on the Arkel. I was looking at it, and was going to go cheaper. Now I can blame the extra spending on you!
I also need a headlight, dynamo-powered I presume. Lots to learn for me there...0 -
If you are not ready to spring for a dyno light check out the chinese magic shine knock-offs.
This is the MagicShine: http://www.amazon.com/MagicShine-MJ-808U-Bicycle-Improved-1100-Lumen/dp/B009GSLUR4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372791458&sr=8-1&keywords=magicshine+bike+light
There is a chinese direct wholesaler that sells this for about $30.00 but I don't have a link (check bikeforums). Found the same light on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-HeadLight-headLamp-improved-battery/dp/B005WPXNQ6/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1372791619&sr=1-1&keywords=spoke+grenade+sg1000e
The version I have is a SpokeGrenade brand that has a 10% setting. At 10% setting, which is fine for riding at night, I get at least 12 hours of light.0 -

Hmmm... I could even get 2 of those, and carry the second battery as a back up...0
