Ok I am new to the group and looking for some help/advice/support (whatever you have to give I will take it).
I am a long time runner. Been running for about 20 years. I am a middle of the packer 10-11 min miles(I can do a 9:15-9:30 for a 5k) but I turned 50 this year and dispite logging a 20-25 mile average per week I have managed to gain about 35-40 pounds over the years. Obviously I have not figured out the food side of the equation. I swear I feel hungry all of the time. I know I eat too much but crap I am hungry and never seem to feel full. I don't eat meat so maybe that is an issue but I read and have talked to plant based runners and they seem to have plenty of energy and a healthy weight.
I am sick and tired of carrying around this weight. I have a marathon on my horizon in October along with a few other races sprinkled along the way and I want to be lighter for them. I also would like to wear my clothes

Me too!!! I've been running for just over a year, and have entered my first marathon in October (I'm 40 this year so clearly mid-life crisis!). I originally started running to lose weight and did early on. Now I'm just loving the running but I'm still carrying 14lbs or so more than I should be. I know I'd enjoy running more if I was leaner but I can't seem to kept my eating down to a sensible level. (Which isn't a new problem for me ). Perhaps we could keep an eye on each other over the coming months whilst we prepare for October? I have a plan if dropping weight in the coming month before the full training kicks in (I'm away on holiday in that time and don't be able to run fir two weeks so seemed like a good time to tackle the weight issue)

I would recommend picking up a copy of Matt Fitzgerald's "Racing Weight". At first glance, it appears to be a bit of an over the top approach to weight control geared toward the highly competitive athlete, but if you take the time to really read it, you begin to realize that there is a lot of solid advice for anyone that is trying to drop a few pounds while also trying to fuel a high endurance training schedule. For me, it was worth the $14 on Amazon. There is also a quick start version that I have seen others recommend, but I have not read it, so I can't offer any advice on that.

Thanks. I will check it out. I love to read. I am so far from racing weight it is not even funny. I would be happy to even see easy running weight.
I feel like I am at slogging weight right now.

the more we weigh, the more we burn running!
down from 270 to 170,managing the calories in part is the hardest.
maybe open your diary so we can give constructive advice?

Ok I though was open but I had it at just friends. Just opened it up.
All right keep in mind that the past couple of days have been good ones for me. I have been hungry but not unbearable.
Before that I believe I may have just been pretending to be on a diet

Since you have about six months to your marathon and training consists of shorter distances at the beginning, it would be easier to shed a few pounds before the effort really starts to build up. It is hard to lose a lot of weight and do a modicum of training without feeling hungry, tired, and generally out of sorts.

& 1 on Fitzgerald's "Racing Weight" as a useful read. I"ve been trying to follow his approach to help me get leaner in advance of my training build for a 70.3 in late August.
