A Team Challenge. Let's work together and achieve something fun :)

So, the idea of Challenges were raised in another thread, so I thought I'd see if there was any interest in a group challenge where we all work together to achieve a goal.
Here's my pitch:
We work together as a group over a (possibly) set period of time to try a reach a goal. We won't have individual targets, only those we set for ourselves. Everyone can do as much or as little as they are happy to do, and I will try and make sure that its inclusive and accessible to all, however active or mobile we all currently are.
I posted in another thread about a website I've been looking at called World Walking - https://worldwalking.org
I propose that we use that to see where we can travel to together. I'll find some walks that seem achievable based on the number of people currently regularly posting in this group, and I'll post the details. We can choose one together, and then set a time period to try and achieve it, whether it be four weeks, six weeks, whatever. We could also leave it open-ended until we achieve it.
I'll set up a spreadsheet that is accessible to all, and each day, you enter your activity on there.
Now, I know we don't all measure our activity in the same way. If you measure by steps, then you enter your steps. If you measure by time, then put your time in and I will convert that to steps using the average adult walking speed (if that's acceptable to the poster), and if you measure in miles, then that's fine too, we can add those on as they are.
We can either just go for a distance - lets say for example we all decide that we want to try and walk a total of 200 miles in four weeks, then I can set that up. If we pick a set walk, we work towards getting from one place to another.
I'll tally up the data on either a daily, weekly, bi-weekly etc basis, and post updates as to how we're doing.
There'll be no pressure on anyone to take part, you can input data as and when you want to, and its only for fun. There'll be no judgement over who does what amount; we'll be working as a team and its just to show what we can achieve together.
Would anyone be interested in something like this? I'm happy to do the set up if you are

I'll give it a couple more days to see if anyone else wants to join our band of merry men and women, but in the mean time, I'll ask whether you guys some questions that will help make it easier to work out the details of the challenge. I've compiled a list of the walk om the World Walking site, and will post some here for us all to choose once I know a little more about what we want to go for.
If you could all let me know the following, it would be much appreciated:
*How do you measure activity(steps, minutes, miles etc):
*Would you prefer a 'point to point' challenge (i.e., London to Rome, walk the Great Wall of China etc), or just aim for a total (500k steps, 1 million etc):
*Do you use Google and/or Excel (for the spreadsheet):
*Preference for challenge length (a week, two, four, ongoing etc):
If point to point...
*Do you have a preference of countries/continents:
If aiming for a total steps challenge...
*Suggestions for a target:

I usually measure in minutes
I walk at 2.5 miles per hour pace as knee does not let me go faster.
I am happy to use google or excel though my version of excel is pretty old and does not always open new documents
I am happy for an ongoing challenge, how about laps round the globe. The circumference of Earth at the equator is about 24,902 miles (40,075 km) with markers along the way. we could aim for that in long term but maybe look up various other things like the great wall of china or sahara desert, london to new york etc, half way round globe etc.

I must confess, I do like the idea of an ongoing 'Walk The World' challenge. There are a couple on WorldWalking, one works out to around 28,000 miles, and the other takes a slightly longer route at around 35,000 miles.
I'd definitely be up for some short term challenges too. Great suggestions, OW0 -
Walk the world works for me. I'll take an interest in any location you choose. I am comfortable using google sheets. I'm doing that for two other challenges I'm in, plus I use google sheets for other stuff. I do the exact same exercise every day, 45 minutes of seated aerobics, and will probably continue to do that for the next 6 months at least.0

Right now I am set up for steps but it converts easily to miles. I don't mind walking around the world, I think that would be interesting. I am most familiar with exel but I'm sure I can figure the other out in time0

Ok, here are walks to consider. They increase in length, ending in a few round the world walks for those wishing to take part in a long term, ongoing challenge.

I'm in! I use iPhone's step counter which converts to miles automatically. While I haven't used a spreadsheet in awhile, I'm sure I'll figure it out. I kinda like the idea of starting at a moderate level challenge--personally I think that completing a group walk in a relatively shorter time would boost my desire/obsessive competitiveness to do longer ones.
Regardless of which one we choose, I'll give the best that I got!0 -
I'm thinking that since I'm a bonafide Anglophile....the Great Britain end to end would be great...I'm imagining doing my evening dance-jog thingy while watching the UK real estate show "Escape to the Country". Yeah, I know...its weird, but thats me!0

Alrighty, so I think we have three potential challenges here then. A 'starter' challenge (to get us warmed up), a mid-range challenge (for when we realise how awesome we are and how well we can do as a team), and then the big one - an ongoing round-the-world walk.
I'd happy to do the set up for all three.
I've set up an account with World Walking that I will use to log how we are doing on any challenge, and then post the updates in a thread that I set up on here for each.
Challenge One:
We're three days away from April, so how would it sound to everyone if I set the starter challenge up starting from 1st April?
To get us going, how about we start with the 160 mile Great Ocean Road walk? And how do people feel about trying to do it in 2 weeks?
There are 8 of us in right now which, even if we split it evenly, is only 20 miles each, we can kick that in the pants in no time! That works out at around a mile and a half every day for 2 weeks. Easy-peasy!
I'll send a link to a spreadsheet asap if we're good to go.
Challenge Two:
How do we feel about walking from John O'Groats to Lands End (UK) together?
This one is a bit more of a challenge. Its over 1000 miles, and I propose that we look at doing this one over the whole month of May. Its 31 days, and it would equal out at doing approximately 9000 steps a day each.
Now, I don't want anyone to feel pressured into doing more than they think they currently can. For some of us, myself included, this will be a real step upwards in terms of exercise (I tend to average out at around 6000 per day at the moment).
If anyone would like to extend the timeline for this, then that's good by me, I'd like everyone to be able to take part, and feel happy doing so. If we did it over 6 weeks for example, then for 8 people, this would equal out at around 5000 steps per day.
Late joiners will, of course, be welcome. The more people join us, the easier it will be.
Challenge Three:
The Big One - A Walk Around The World!
I propose that we set this up to run after we finish Challenge Two. I know for us Brits, the summer months will be easier for us to get out an about as (hopefully!) there'll be less adverse weather for us to fight with.
Obviously, it would be silly to even dream of a timelimit for this one, so this can just roll on and we can see how we do.
My thoughts on adding steps to this one would be that I would either give you the account details for World Walking, and you can each add what you've done, or if you can tally up what you've done and send it to me once a week, then I will update as we go along.
To set up the World Walking account, I set up an email address - 300groupwalkingchallenges@gmail.com. You could send a once weekly (or however frequently you want) email with your totals, or if you'd be happier sending details via MFP, feel free to send me a personal message.
Again, people can join at any stage. The more the merrier
So, are we all still in? Do you have some studying walking/cycling/dancing boots?0 -
I'd still like to do this, I usually do between 6000 to 10,000 steps a day. I really like what you have listed, starting with a 2 week warm up then on to the longer ones.0

Right now I can only do about 0.5 miles every other day. Once I drop 20 lbs, I should be able to do about 2 miles every other day and after 30 lbs, mayber 2-3 miles every day.0
-
I use the Leslie sansone DVD walk a mile in your home so yes I think I can help reach our 1st challenge in 2 weeks0
-
I can probably on average make that target contribution, some days I walk more, others I do not walk at all. We need Rob, he does lots of walking.0

Hi @BarneyRubbleMD
If you'd like to join in, we'd all be delighted for you to contribute as many steps as you're comfortable doing, be it ten or ten thousand. Every step you add gets us a step closer to our goal.
If you'd like to wait a little while until you're more comfortable, then that's fab too, you'll be welcome anytime0 -

I've been doing this one too every now and then. Its how I started exercising when I began this road to health, doing it once every other day, then once a day. At first, I was exhausted at the end of it! Its quite a positive workout, and done in a short time, so it doesn't feel like it never ends like some exercise, ha ha.

Ok, so I've set up a basic spreadsheet where can enter our activity. As this is mostly a discussion thread, I'll set up another thread entitled something like 'Challenge One: The Great Ocean Road".
I'll post a link to the spreadsheet in the new thread, hopefully everyone will be able to access it. Please do let me know if you can't.0 -
I thought I already responded to this thread this morning, but I don't see my post. The challenges you have set out look great. So, I was wondering how silly we can get with this. Can I make up a character and talk about stuff I see while I'm virtually walking? Mermaids are really attracted to me so I'm pretty sure I'm going to see some on the Great Ocean Road.

I saw you quoted me so I thought I'd try out the quote feature on MFP. So glad you folks plan to have some fun along the way.0
