Thank you Mirabelle. When I decided I wanted to lose weight again I looked at my past efforts and tried to look at it and see what went wrong. Why did I quit? I decided this time to let my success's motivate me, to give myself a little bit of rope, and look at the big picture when I stall out before I can get disappointed. So far so good!!0

About 10 years ago, I had great success with weight watchers. After my hysterectomy I got very down on myself and gained everything back plus. So now I am back to weight watchers and I really like it. They are focusing now on 'clean' eating and its really working for me. Its a little slower to take off the weight - its difficult for me to get exercise in, but the scales are going down.
I like mfp website/app sooooo much better so I am doing my journaling twice.
The first time I needed to lose was at 29 and I weighed a whopping 148 pounds. I lost the 20 very quickly and stayed with it for quite a while. Once I stopped attending the meetings as an employee/lifetime member, I began gaining it back a little at a time until I hit the magic 218. I lost 38 pounds, then gained it back over the past couple of years because my feet were killing me - plantar fasciitis and bone spurs are hideous. It is tough to walk two steps much less exercise when that is going on. However, I learned that if I hobbled to the Total Gym that I purchased with a prayer of hope, I could work out without sobbing. Then, my mother-in-law found out she had two types of cancer - hence two surgeries and we are in the second recovery phase with home health. I joined a local gym for one month until I can go home and am hitting every class I can survive!
FOOD - We researched quite a few things - we use Zeal Wellness and Zeal Protein shakes to support a primarily clean eating plan.0 -
Mitsimr and Maribelle, you both make very good points. I love the approach. I tend to do well all day, basically choosing meats, brown rice, veggies and fruit, nuts and such. I stay within my calorie range, but then find myself bingeing in the evening. I've been trying to lose 1 1/2 - 2 lbs/week, but at this rate I'm going to keep gaining. I think I'll try increasing my calories and accept the 1 lb/week so that I'm not feeling deprived and then depressed!
Thanks to all of you who are willing to share what works for you and what doesn't! Loving this group!0 -

There is a phone app called nag
I use it for reminding me every 2 hrs to eat
I would suggest it to everybody, bc time runs fast and we forget to eat, and we get hungry and binge1 -

If I really cannot stand not to snack at night - which doesn't happen so much at the moment but it still does around the time of the month...and I used to experience night binges terribly!!
I make loads and loads of sugar free jelly (jello) and literally eat to my hearts content. If you're not worried about artificial sugars it's a good way to "feel" like you're eating loads but taking in hardly anything in the way of calories.1 -

Yes, sugar free jello works and I can even put a tbs of whipped light cream0 -

I have tried lots of diets over the years. Find smaller portions of healthy food the best except i get tempted the most in late afternoon. I am working on snacks that are healthy but take away wanting more, like hummus, fruit, handful nuts, etc.

I have done WW the PointPlus program and had so much success with it in the past but when they changed to SmartPoints - that went to He** in a handbasket so I decided to just count calories for a change on MFP. I had downloaded UVFP app on my phone to do the WW PP program but it has actually been easier counting calories on MFP this time around. And this is such a great group for support that I'm loving it.0

Least they are healthy snacks though! You may lose weight slower by eating more than you should - but that goes for all of us. Least you can smile knowing you are doing your body good with fruit and nuts etc0 -

They always change things don't they. i used to be an avid fan of Rosemary Conley until she started bringing out all fashionable diets...
Calories is just as easy as WW, and once you've been doing it a while you'll be like all of us other people here who can tell you the calorie content of any food mentioned! lol1 -
I heard a friend talking about good results with a the 'Fast Metabolism Diet'. I googled it and kinda skimmed the reviews. I was wondering if any of you have tried it.0

I don't know how I didn't notice this conversation--I'm one of y'all who has tried everything. I crash dieted and starved through my teens. I graduated high school around 220 lbs. and six feet tall.
I moved to New York for college and walked as much as 10 miles a day. I lost 40 pounds the first two months there, even though I was stuffing myself with street food. The more I learned the trains and buses, the less I walked, and my weight crept to a lifetime high of 273.
At 21, I moved back down south and went to work in a health food store. Became a vegetarian, then a vegan for a short time. Walked 3 miles a day. Gradually lost down to 203. Took a job as a traveling sales rep in the health food business, slowly regained over several years. Boss sold the company and I went to culinary school. In my last semester of culinary school, I was back to 264.
I met a new gynecologist who finally explained the connection between PCOS and glucose metabolism, and it changed my life. I took metformin for six months and committed to the Atkins diet. By my follow up appointment I was 185, and I stayed there for a couple of years. I began the long walks again, and I was pretty comfortable maintaining.
Then I met my ex-husband, who lived on Chinese delivery and various rice based cuisines. I fell in love and ate all my meals at his place, and it wasn't long before the weight was creeping on. We got married and moved out of the city, and I reached 243 when he and I decided to go on Nutrisystem. I joined the LA Fitness and got a trainer, and I ate 1250 calories of packaged food for a year or so, and again stalled at 185. I just couldn't lose any more, and I was bored with the food and my husband had long stopped eating it and was back on Chinese.
When I left the hotel pastry kitchen and started my job with this catering company, I was back to 243 again. I started low carbing at work, got down to 195 or so. Went through a divorce and a disc surgery, moved in with friends. Started running, lifting much more, spending two or three hours in the gym. Did P90X and ate the Tony Horton way. Egg whites and oatmeal and bodybuilder food. I was probably eating 3000 calories a day and burning 4000. I loved heavy lifting and was really getting into a lifestyle.
I got down to 185 again, but was definitely beginning to change the composition of my body. I might have been on the verge of building enough muscle to start a major fat loss. But, I moved to Louisiana with a new boyfriend and gave up my beloved big box gym. I never found the same lifestyle there, the relationship was no what I expected, and my job in Colorado (with all the nice workout equipment) came to an end and I was transferred to North Dakota.
I was in and out of many different camps there, and sometimes I had equipment of space to work out. I went through a lot of changes. I bought a house in Louisiana, ended that bad relationship, struggled to keep from gaining weight. Gained and lost small amounts.
By the time all the oil camps in North Dakota shut down, I was back to around 240. I went to Alaska and worked my butt off for the first year. This year, I am finally settling down to work on ME.
Now I'm in a nice camp with a lovely gym and good food choices. My job is as secure as it will ever be. The Fitbit trend reached me, and I feel like everything is coalescing. The wisdom I have reached is this:
I will lose weight no matter which eating plan I follow, as long as I work out and walk every day. Activity is my biggest fat burner. So, I log my food to keep me honest. I try to keep my carbs to less than 30% of my total calories and my protein up around one gram for every pound of ideal lean body mass. I try to have a 500 calorie deficit and then add 500 calories of exercise. So, I eat between 2000 and 2500 calories and burn between 3000 and 3500. I do a really good job of eating enough fiber, little sugar, plenty of antioxidants and good day. But my goal is to exercise...and this time I will crack the barrier and reach 165.2 -
Brilliant story there...
I figured out after a longgg time that whatever dieted I followed I would lose weight. Finally have settled on a diet plan I like and could become a way of life if I can get over the sugar cravings at the time of the month which are killing this way of eating unfortunately.
You sound like a very active person too, which is gotta be great for your health (and sanity!)1 -

I haven't tried it, but to be honest it looks a little too taxing on time and mental activity for me!
I like the idea of keeping the metabolism working well as I do believe that our body can adjust to whatever eating plan we are on and then the success slows down... but all the different phases and rules on different days etc would be too much for me to follow!1 -
Mirabelle that was totally the key for me...what can I live with?0

Just with full fat Greek yogurt, not fat free, and use a sugar free dark chocolate instead of regular0

Thank you so much! I will take a look as I promised myself this time around that I can give in to my cravings but this time I need to make them the low carb full fat way and not just take the easy way out!0 -
There are some low-carbers who swear by cocoa powder and sweetener stirred into soft cream cheese, also. Tastes like chocolate cheesecake.0

I'm stuck( on my weight loss) and feeling like I want to do something different rather than just give up like I usually do.1

I actually have made mascarpone mixed with sugar free syrup... then put a dollop of whipped cream on top. Gorgeous, but quite calorie laden! lol0 -

Great idea! Sometimes just trying something different can be the extra motivation you need... it makes it more exciting and gives you something new to focus on.
Have you had a look through what diets we are doing on the group and seen anything that takes your fancy?0 -
Well, I tried a paleo hybrid that was great and I lost quite a bit of weight with it last year but I was also so much more active too. This is the least actice I have ever been and I just can't seem to get my mojo back. I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that I'm older or peri menoupasal but I hope it passes.0

Well I am extremely inactive - and most often housebound due to some mental issues. You do have to eat a lot less if you don't do any activity but it can sooooo be done! Calorie-wise I can lose steadily on about 1400 a day - if I go down to 1200 I get what most people would say is a good rate of weight loss.
I do a low carb diet - fell of the wagon recently but I still endorse this way of eating because when you have to eat so little calories the protein and fat and no starches make you feel so much fuller on a lot less.
Worth thinking about.2 -

Agreed, the less carbs the better!
I know the drill but somehow I am better in suggesting than following my own knowledge Ahahahaha1 -

I'm at that point too - I've done WW for so long and all of their different plans I want to try something different. I'm really leaning towards low carb now. Mirabelle - Is it really hard to get going on low carb?Mirabelle1983 wrote: »Well I am extremely inactive - and most often housebound due to some mental issues.
