Ouya

Anyone get an Ouya? Have thoughts about it? My friend got one and I played at his place for a bit last night, but the multiplayer game selection was weak at best. I haven't checked out any single player games yet.

I have nothing good to say about Ouya, but I haven't played it. I'm a developer, I attended SXSWi this past March and watched the keynote with Ouya's founder Julie Uhrman. She was evasive and did not answer questions about the platform, instead dodging them and leaving a vast amount of ambiguity. She's also incredibly out of touch with who her audience really is. At one point, she said that she wanted to revive living room gaming because it was "dying" and talked about her fond memories of playing Mario on the couch with her brothers. I can tell you that on any given afternoon there are 4 boys in my house, glued to the TV playing CoD, Minecraft, or Halo.

A friend of mine was a backer and was supposed to receive his console around the end of March. He just received his "partial" order last week. Here he is, someone who gave her money to develop the product, and he received it after it was publicly available. Crazy stuff!

My general opinion is that it's going to have a small niche following and that's about it. The technical specs seem kind of weak to me. Not a lot of juice, and not that much storage. It'd be great to see this do well but I just don't think it will.

I received my pre-ordered Ouya on release day.

Unfortunately since I have a HDMI projector with no audio out, I cannot hear any sound from my Ouya.

I have to buy a home-theater receiver to break out the audio.

So alas, my Ouya is sitting there unused for the moment, until I can figure out how to listen to it.

but for better results, invest into a converter box.

    You're welcome.

As for Ouya....WHY? Just....WHY. If I want to play aps, I'll stick with my tablet.

Sounds like the overall opinion doesn't differ much from my own, haha. I definitely wasn't impressed with what I saw.

Glad I didn't jump on it when I had the chance. They did the big no-no they screwed with the Kickstarters. I was never impressed with the Specs of the machine. My Galaxy note 2 is a much faster then it. I can easy get an Micro-USB to HDMI cable since my Galaxy note 2 is MHL compatible. Then sync a PS3 controller via bluetooth to the phone and I have the same exact thing for less money.
  • I would really like to try TowerFall and Bombsquad, but that's not enough for me to drop $100 on the console. The controllers are also big POS. Thankfully, TowerFall is rumored to come to other consoles after the 6-month exclusivity clause wears off with the Ouya.. so maybe I won't need one after all?

If Chromecast someday updates to stream games to the TV, then Ouya will have a very short life span.
