I am selling my mountain bike tomorrow to fund the purchase of a Garmin (this leaves me at n=1, which will need to be rectified in the not too distant future).
I have an appalling sense of direction, so in order to ensure my long rides don't turn into an epic search for the way home, navigation is a must have feature. I was thinking of getting the 810. Thoughts?

My only comment would be that the Edge 810 is getting a bit "long in the tooth." If it were me I'd be looking at the 1000. Performance Bike's website currently has both the 810 and the 1000 on sale for the same price.
Check out DC Rainmaker's review of the 1000. That should tell you everything about it.0 -

Pretty much what he says...
I'm running a 800, which is very long in the tooth now, and I'm hoping that there's a "product refresh" on the cards for the 810 coming soon-ish, as I don't really want to buy into "old technology" (if you compare the updates the 520 got over the 510, and extrapolate what a potential 820 could / should be like) - I've looked at a 1000, and, to be honest, it's a big old lump - it looks like you've got a mobile phone on the handlebars... To be honest, I'd have gone for the 520 this time, if it'd have had provision for add-in external memory cards.
But, really, if the 1000 is too big a unit, then there's really no sensible alternative IMO to the Garmin 810 - which is a shame, because if there was, it'd force Garmin to up their game and improve their firmware...

The 1000 is too big for me too. I have a 520 and I've been very happy with it. I love the "sensor pool" concept, which the 520 shares with the 1000. So nice not to have to remember to switch bikes. Especially if you switch bikes as much as I do. The 510 was an improvement over the 500/800, but the 520 is a massive step forward.
Back to the size of the 1000, the OP's interest in the GPS functionality made me think it would be a good choice. Big, high-rez screen and included maps. That's what I'd want if I was looking for a device to use heavily as a navigation tool.
I'm a fan of Garmin devices, by and large, but it would be nice to see some other competitors out there.

What I really want is the 520 with proper navigation rather than breadcrumb trails, but it would appear that it doesn't exist yet. I guess the 820 if it ever exists would be what I was after, however I have money burning a hole in my pocket right now and am currently using a forerunner watch for cycling, so I NEED to buy myself an Edge of some description before the weekend
I think I will go look at the 1000; I am happy to compromise on size if it means I can find my way home easily
