Just found out I have hypothyroid

I was tired, depressed, extremely achey and weak all the time. I finally got my blood drawn and found out I have hypothyroidism. It seems odd to me because I did not have a noticably difficult time trying to lose 50 pounds since January, and I know it can be difficult with this condition. The doctor put me on Levothyroxine. Is anyone else on this medication? How has it worked for you?

  • I was diagnosed about 18 months ago My best advice is to educate yourself. Levothyroxine is a synthetic T4 only hormone. There are several synthetic brands on the market, I was on was Synthroid. It did not work well for me but I was told that was my only choice. Pay attention to your symptoms not just labwork. There are other options if you still don't feel like yourself after a few weeks. I switched to a natural desiccated thyroid and feel tons better. Best of luck!!!!

I was diagnosed when I was 12 ( I am now 20 ) I was on Oroxyn all this time but felt exactly the same im now on armour thyroid for the last month after having my REVERSE T3 Levels tested, Armour Thyroid is a natural medication I feel better but im still working on dosage's I have lost 5kg in the last week and all up 15kg since February. Afew years ago I lost 20kg but over the past year I put it all back on you really have to keep at it forever or you will forever be a yoyo dieter I think... I was also very lucky I didn't ever suffer from depression although I am a very emotional person... Good Luck and definatly educate your self there are some great websites so definatly have a look

I think that the other posters are correct. Be careful of the generic for synthroid though. If you are going to take synthroid take the branded. There can be a 20% therapeutic swing that the FDA considers equivalent to the branded. The therapeutic window for treatment is much lower than that though. Batch to batch I have heard there can be drastic swings in your TSH. That makes you feel horrible. I have always been told that from all my Endocrinologists that specialize in Thyroid (some are diabetic specialists). It is also important not to let a doctor tell you that your TSH can be up around 5. One is ideal and that is what you should shoot for. Checking that your free T3 is at the correct dose will make sure that you have usable thyroid because TSH has to be converted to T3 to effect your metabolism.

I have also discovered that cutting out too many calories or a particular food group can lead many (not all) hypothyroid suffers bodies to defend the weight by slowing the metabolism. I learned that the hard way. Talk about frustrating. I was down as low as 1200 calories and less that 80 carbs a day and gaining weight. I added carbs and calories and now I am losing.
