Good afternoon Desert Knights!
My name is SrA Siira, and I recently received an email from a friend down in Hawaii about how they have put together a group challenge to run a total of 692 miles between April 4th, and December 31st, and it gave me the idea to do a similar run challenge here at Gordon.
Often times, people struggle to find the motivation to run, following the really nebulous concepts of “Being healthy”, or “Get a better run time” and the goal of the 31 IS Run Challenge is to give a more concrete plan to help motivate us all to get off the couch a little more often.
Here is the plan:
Run a set number of miles total by the end of the challenge based on how many people you have running with you. The more people you have in your team, the less you have to run. There are 213 days left in the year as of June 1st, 2016. That’s about 30 weeks left in the year, which leaves you at:
Number of Runners: 1 2 3
Total Miles to Run: 210 360 450
Miles per Runner: 210 180 150
Miles per Week: 7 12 15
Miles/Week/Runner: 7 6 5
In order to keep track of our progress, there is an app/website called MyFitnessPal that allows the creation of a group everyone can join in on. The app syncs with many other commonly used apps like, but not limited to:
1. FitBit
2. Garmin Connect
3. Jawbone Up
4. MapMyRun
5. Pen and Paper (Not an actual app)
If you’re interested in conquering this challenge with us, send us an email and we’ll put you on the charts, and let you know which MyFitnessPal group to join. You don’t want to download another app and make yet another account? Don’t! SrA Wang has volunteered to help me keep track of all the miles run, so if you are planning on joining us on this journey, and don’t want to sign up for the app or anything, please email us when you can, letting us know how you’re doing. This is a self-paced honor system set up, so integrity first.
If you can’t run, then you can walk, swim, or bike. In order to make it fair for everyone, if you are biking, bike four times the distance (more bragging rights?); if you swim, swim a tenth of the distance (Go Swimmers).
I ask that you think of this challenge as a way to have a little fun and not just to improve PT scores or increase cohesion. Hopefully it has those effects, but that’s not the entire goal. Have fun, make a game out of it, and enjoy yourself. You do you. Whatever it takes.
If you want to be a part of a group for this goal, but are having a hard time putting one together, let one of us know, and we’ll get you in contact with some other runners, and if you are a part of a group, please let us know. Don’t forget to come up with a team name! The Air Force loves team names.
