Neuropathy

I first noticed some numbness in my feet before I was diagnosed. It made sense once I figured out I was diabetic, but I had hoped that by controlling my BG they would start to feel better - or at least not feel worse. Shortly after I was diagnosed I started having some sharp pains at night in my feet that kept me up. I tried taking advil or tylenol, but it didn't do much. Sunday night the pain was so bad I never got to sleep. I got 1 hour. Despite taking advil, tylenol PM, and more advil. I'm headed in to see a doctor today and hoping to get some relief, or at least strategies for when it strikes at night.

Anyone else suffer from this?

I do. I recognized the nerve pain due to similarities in the feeling that I had in my right foot after a lower back surgery years ago. Because of this - and the SLEW of commercials for Lyrica I was able to self-diagnosed once I realized I had diabetes.

Right now I take Gabapentin (Lyrica was too expensive w/my insurance, and I actually don't have the side effects either) 3xs a day, with a few extra in the bottle for those nights that it is worse. Keep in mind I sit ALL day with my job. which causes edema, and exacerbates the problem.

I am working with my GP and Podiatrist to improve the conditions here are the steps we are taking:
    - Gabapentin prescription (Lyrica the 1st year, it made me very tired)
    - Get up and move every hour
    - GOOD shoes (tennis shoes - no more flip flops for me)
    - Nutritional Supplement of NeuRX-TF (insurance does not cover this, and I will start taking it just as soon as I can work the $40/mo into my budget) - studies have found that consistent use of this have been known to reverse the damage to the nerves, but it takes about 6 mos before you see any progress
    - control your sugars. If this is not under control, then your Neuropathy will not be either.

I still have pain - but I find the more I move the better my feet feel.
