hi I'm a beginner and running a half marathon in December, can anyone recommend a free or cheap good half marathon app? Thanks

How often and how far do you run that the moment?
If you are a complete beginner to running, C25K is really popular to go from no running to running 5km.

I'm not aware of any half marathon apps as such; but quite a few of the general running apps also offer training plans, sometimes free, sometimes as a paid premium feature. Or you pick a plan from the Internet one that matches your fitness level, and just use an app to track running distance, route, pace, ...

I used one from Hal Higdon for my first half (or at least started out with that, and then tweaked it a little to match my schedule).

My favourite running app is "Zombies, Run!", but if you aren't into zombie stories and only want to track your runs, there's lots of apps you can use for that, like Strava or Runtastic.

In any case, what you want to do is increase the distance you run gradually, to avoid injuries. A common progression might be 10% more distance each week; with a "cutback" week every four weeks, where you scale down the distance again to allow your body to recover. Don't worry too much about speedwork, intervals and the likes, first you want to work up to a solid base.
