My mind and body do not work together, especially during an injury. One thing I've been doing is water aerobics. Now, it's not your grandma's style of geriatric water exercises, granted a lot of people in the class don't push themselves whatsoever. If I'm not gasping for breath and jumping and splashing higher than everyone else, then I ain't working.
Anyway, by pushing it hard in the pool, my joints get a little rest, because the water is easier on the joints, but I can get my heart rate up high, and be satisfied.
So those of you with injuries, you might want to try the pool. And if you can't jump, you can definitely swim!
Good luck!
