Hello Iowa!
I know it is a fairly inactive group and I may get no responses before the fair ends, but... with the fair coming up, who is going? What are you planning to eat? Are you planning to stay within calorie and macro goals or call it a cheat day?
Personally, I've been doing low carb for several months now and it has caused significant improvement. I know everyone talks up CICO, but the same calories on low carb give me 5 times the rate of loss. I have somewhat of an understanding about why, but I'm not going to go into that here... the point is that with a low carb way of eating, the state fair will be a challenge to navigate.
Thankfully, I'm going into this with a plan... while 50-60g of carbs in a single meal will throw me out of ketosis and cause BG challenges, it will not be enough to make me no longer fat adapted. So I'm going to have *some* carbs, but still try to manage at below 150g for the day (which is about 4-5 times what I normally eat). For foods, I'll focus on low carb selections such as turkey legs, pork chop on a stick, and removing breading from other options (bun-less burgers, remove bread from corn dogs, etc.). The biggest challenge may be avoiding the craft beer tent. I'll also go online and look at vendor options before-hand so I know where the stands are located with selections that fit a low carb diet. Otherwise, I'm going to not worry as much about total calories as long as I don't over-do the carbs.
How about you - If you are going, what is your plan?

By the way, for fellow Android users: There is an App in the Google Play Store, made by Gannett (the publishing company that owns the Des Moines Register and lots and lots of other media). It is called "Food Finder." The app has nutrition facts for most (not all) foods and locations where such foods can be found. I will definitely be using it.2

My family and I spend 3 to 4 days at the fair each year because we show goats. I have used the food finder app for the last few years. It is a great tool when all of our meals are on the fairgrounds during our stay. I also make sure to keep up on all the new " food on a stick" choices that come up each year. Like you, I look for low carb meals. My favorites are the shrimp on a stick. One big find was a booth that offers sugar free lemonade shake ups! They will use sweetner when requested. Some of the lowest carb meals are in the Ag building. I always make sure to go to the Egg Council stand where they hand out free boiled eggs on a stick.

We might go, my family and I have never gone and I think it would be fun. We live up near Spencer so hit that every year.
For the CCF, we aim for the pork/beef producers and get whatever grilled option they have. We do hit the Tom Thumb donuts because once a year is a treat.0
