FitBit cals earned question

I am so confused with MFP and how it calculates exercise cals earned from steps.
Ex. Monday I had 3891 steps and MFP gave me 290 cals and yesterday I had 6919 steps and MFP gave me 191 cals. MFP is so random with the number it calculates. It seems the less steps I make the higher the number.
Any suggestions on how to correctly track steps?
Should I remove my FitBit when walking on the treadmill and log that time as actual exercise and not steps?

I would recommend that you read the FAQ found in the stickies. Here's a handy link: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10098937/faq-syncing-logging-food-exercise-calorie-adjustments-activity-levels-accuracy/p1
Do NOT remove your Fitbit when you're using the treadmill - that is exactly the kind of exercise it is best at tracking. But, if you have a tracker that you wear on your wrist then make sure you're not holding onto the rails of the treadmill with your Fitbit arm.
MFP does not base your exercise adjustment on how many steps you've taken. The only thing that MFP does with the step count it gets from Fitbit is display it. MFP calculates your exercise adjustment on the calorie burn number it gets from Fitbit. You can see how it does the calculation by clicking on the little 'i' next to it on the exercise page (MFP website) or by touching the exercise adjustment in your diary on the MFP mobile app.1
