How do you choose your running route?

I usually either go on the treadmill or 'just around the block', mainly because that's the run my dad 'taught' me and I know pretty well (I love to run when it's dark, so I can get lost too easily!
). I'd love to do a longer run, but I don't feel like I know the local area well enough - how did you find your running routes?
I'm also considering joining a running group, so I suppose that would help - can anyone offer their experiences with these?

Local running groups are the best. If you have a local running store check with them. Also search Facebook for local groups.
You can also find routes on websites like MapMyRun.com and www.usatf.org.0 -
I look at the local Strava segments then check what routes other people had run when including them. I've found some pretty good routes that way.0
