How does an hour exerviving compare to an hour of biking or jogging?

One of the goals of my 50 Day VR Fitness Challenge was that it would enable me to transition from being sedentary to doing traditional fitness activities with relative ease, and I'm happy to report that it worked.

In the past week I was able to bike and jog for an entire hour, something that I wouldn't have been able to easily do before my VR Challenge - given my history - without getting cramps, shortness of breath, or feeling like I was about to die. In other words, after my hour biking or jogging I still had plenty of gas left in the tank and I credit my VR conditioning entirely for that.

Just for fun, I wanted to compare what an hour of each of these activities does to my heart.

VR Training: 1:05
  • 9 min: Audioshield (Warmup)
  • 20 min: Thrill of the Fight
  • 20 min: Holopoint (Squat to Dodge, Waves 1-15 x ~2)
  • 10 min: Holoball (cooldown)

  • HR Min: 71 BPM
  • HR Max: 170 BPM
  • HR Avg: 136 BPM
  • Cal Burn: 738 kcal

Some caveats to the VR snapshot: In contrast to an hour of biking or jogging over a set path, my calorie burns in VR could flucuate significantly from day to day depending on a lot of gaming and tech variables. They spanned from about 650 cals to as many as 870, but in the 35 exervive sessions I did over my 7 week challenge, the average cal burn was 738 kcal, so I'm providing one VR session that burned exactly that many. A second caveat here is that my VR sessions included a 10 min "warmup" and "cooldown" where I played a slower paced game. There is no comprobable warmup or cooldown included with either the jog or the bike data.

Outdoor Biking 1:03
  • Pace: 13 mi/hr
  • HR Min: 91 BPM
  • HR Max: 164 BPM
  • HR Avg: 138 BPM
  • Cal Burn: 732 kcal

Outdoor Jog 1:03
  • Pace: 12 min/mi
  • HR Min: 102 BPM
  • HR Max: 170 BPM
  • HR Avg: 155 BPM
  • Cal Burn: 881 kcal
