Hello everyone! I just posted my introduction in the pinned thread above, and wanted to join in on the daily thread. I'm in.... and hoping for a successful week. I guess my main goal is to behave and be accountable for my "evening" snacking. My hardest time. Its a beautiful day here so I am going to get outside for some exercise.0
-
@NadiaMayl glad you're in for another week! How's everything going with you?
@maureli very nice to meet you! Glad you decided to join us here. Looking forward to getting to know you.0 -
I did not have any soda this morning. I'm taking it one hour at a time with that. It's gotten waaaaay out of hand, and I need to beat my sugar addiction. Still waiting to hear what my latest A1c is from my doctor. I'm not looking forward to facing the music with him!
I've been battling depression again the past week or so, and that makes things even more difficult. Hoping I can pull out of this fog soon.
Have a good day everyone!
@Kerryatoon and @heatherc369 I hope you two are doing ok. We miss you around here!0 -
Welcome @maureli ! We're a small participating group, and 2 of our active ladies are a bit busy right now, but they'll be back soon... They check in here a few times per week still. And then there's @AZLisaLou and myself! So read around and come to post your challenges whenever you want!
@AZLisaLou I'm sorry you're struggling with depression at the moment, and I hope you have the right tools to get through it quickly, I know it's a struggle! And keeping a balance is tough! But good for you for coming in here and sharing AND keeping accountable on the sodas! Sugar is probably the most addicting legal drug to get rid of, it's everywhere! Have you ever considered doing a full sugar detox? I know, don't panic, but quitting ALL processed sugars completely? I did a few years back and it was horrible for about three days and then I started feeling so much better!
I'm doing OK. Got really frustrated today with studying for the stinking math part of the test. I felt like an idiot. I only got 4 right out of 18 in the practice test. Environment was probably not best, with kids in and out and people talking, not very focused. End of the afternoon, so also tired.... But still ONLY four right? Why am I even trying for this?!? Anyway, just a blip of frustration lingering. Hoping tomorrow will be better!still keeping up with plenty of water intake, good eating, but struggling to get the exercise in!

@nadiamayl math is tough! Have you considered hiring a tutor for 1 or 2 times a week to go over the main things and then you can practice until the next time they come? My son has a tutor for Algebra II and she charges $30/hr. You could put out an ad or contact the math department at the local university or community college. Might help you get through the rough spots with less frustration. Just a suggestion.
What is involved in a full sugar detox? does that include fruit? Do you have a good link you recommend? I'm sure there's a lot of BS out there mixed in with the facts, and I wouldn't know one from the other.
Well, part of my day was good. I started off the first half with no soda, a slice of deli roast beef and a piece of cheese for a quick breakfast. Some diet soda, then for lunch I had pineapple and apple with peanut butter. It was delicious. But then the cravings got the better of me and I had some soda today along with some ice cream after dinner. ugh. Terrible. I'm embarrassed, but I need to stay accountable for what I do good or bad. I had Huli Huli Chicken for dinner. It's done in the crock pot and has a sauce made with soy sauce, brown sugar, crushed pineapple, garlic, a little chicken stock, a little Italian dressing and ketchup. Sounds weird, but it was pretty good. I had it on a whole wheat bun and just had one. I saved half the sauce and put it in the freezer. It will be great on a night where I don't feel like cooking. I can defrost it, heat it up, add a little cornstarch to thicken it, put it over chicken and rice with broccoli on the side. Easy peasy, and good too.
Going to try for a good day tomorrow. I'll try to build on the bright spots of my day today and see if I can go further with it.
@Nadiamayl I'm really interested in hearing more about a sugar detox. Thanks!
@maureli how did you do today?0 -
Good Morning! I came back
Thank you both for the welcomes, I think it will be great to check in everday and see how everyones making out.
I actually did have a good day yesterday. I am always trying....but it was really the first day in awhile that I had success. (Usually by that I mean after supper). I had my measured amount of crispy- minis (sort of makes me feel like I'm eating something I shouldn't be) and a cup of herbal tea. Supper was chicken, mashed potatoes and carrots. Lunch was a salad and egg and yogurt and cottage cheese (mixed together...another favorite of mine) and breakfast was a whole wheat bagel and egg whites. I am a creature of habit and seem to eat a lot of the same things day in and day out.
Tonight I am planning on making a new dinner, found this recipe for whats called "middle eastern chicken and chickpea stew". Hope everyone likes it. If its good I'll share the recipe, its from eatingwell.com
I got out for my run yesterday, today I don't think I'll do a lot, maybe some core exercises....I have to make a trip in to town.
@AZLisaLou - good luck with the soda, I do like it too. I would have to say I'd pick 7-up or pepsi. Sugar is a real culprit. I do hear of a lot of people doing the detox and have good results with it. I wouldn't mind finding out more about it myself. I hope that you have a good day tomorrow
@nadiamayl - good luck to you on the gre program! Yes, math is the tough one, always was for me too. Hope you have a good day and look forward to hearing again from you!
OK, I am off to start my day.0 -
Sugar detox is pretty much quitting all processed sugar intakes for a few weeks and seeing how your body feels without it.
Depending on each personality, you can do it cold turkey, or you can do it per meal (not have any processed sugar for breakfast) for a few weeks and then add lunch, and so forth.
I did processed sugar cold turkey because if I eat 'one cookie' then I'll eat 5! I still had fruit. If I wanted pancakes, instead of syrup, I did banana slices or a fresh fruit compote with vanilla and cinnamon, almost better than syrup. If you MUST have something with sugar, try to substitute for as unprocessed as possible: honey, real maple syrup, turbinado sugar.
I was addicted to cereal, like REALLY. I had to have it for dinner (I eat warm lunch) or I'd feel panicked. I am no any more! After doing sugarless eating for a few months, I started reintroducing it smartly (again, avoiding white sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc). I quit sodas then as well, I don't even crave them any more, really ever!
Here an article about it:
http://dailyburn.com/life/health/sugar-detox-diet/
http://www.motherearthliving.com/health-and-wellness/sugar-detox-sugar-withdrawal-ze0z1206zmel
I don't believe in fad diets, I believe in researching the logic behind a trend and using common sense to see if it's healthy, achievable and really healthful. Again, use what works for you for your advantage!
Have a great day ladies!

@NadiaMayl I read the two articles. Thanks for the links! I'm glad to hear the sugar detox is not trying to deprive anyone of carbs. Although their recommendation is still a little low, but maybe that's just for the detox term. The American Diabetes Association recommends about 180 g carbs/day, whereas the detox recommends 120g carbs. I think the 120g is reasonable during a detox period. And I'm soooo glad they're not trying to eliminate fruits! You know, one of my favorite shows that I find inspiring is "My 600lb Life" on TLC. However, the doctor that does the surgeries tells the patients "NO CARBS!" including no fruit. That's so unhealthy in the long term. That's something I'm very particular about and that I get aggravated with.
This may sound like a really dumb question, but does the sugar detox include home made things that include white sugar? I know that sounds dumb. I feel dumb for even asking. I baked an Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal bread today using the apple butter I recently made. It contains oats, which are good for me, real apples, and 1 cup of sugar (for the whole loaf, so each serving is only a part of that....is that bad?) I did not do the sugary glaze that the recipe called for. The apple bread on its own is delicious. Should I just avoid these types of things during detox and then I can have them in moderation when I reintroduce a little sugar back into my life?
How long did you detox for before going into maintenance? Thanks for bringing this topic up!0 -
@maureli It seems as though your diet is pretty sound. How was the soup? How are you doing today? Have you been able to get through the evening again? what are crispy-minis?
I haven't done great today. I really need to do the sugar detox that @nadiamayl is recommending. I know it's going to be painful, and I'm not good with withdrawals, so I don't know how well I'll cope, and even if I can do it. I quit smoking a few years ago, and the only way I was able to do it was with Chantix. No withdrawals. Any other way of trying I failed because I couldn't deal with that part of it. So quitting sugar is giving me the same type of anxiety just thinking about it.
Hope you two are having a good day! Just want to say thanks for the support, the conversation and comradery that you give. It's appreciated!0 -
@AZLisaLou the whole sugarless thing can be taken as strict or as flexible as you can do it! For me it worked best to go at it cold turkey, but if that causes you too much anxiety, go slower. On your oatmeal bread, even homemade goods should be done without white sugar. Have you tried substituting with turbinado (basically unbleached sugar in the raw)? For sugars and flours, think about the word 'unbleached', means they're using some bleachlike chemical to get it white because neither are naturally white. Would you be drinking droplets of chlorox? Likely not, right? I've done away with all refined powders, and only use wholewheat and other sugars now...
As far as how long? It's up to you. I felt so great that I stayed away from sugar for about 6 months. It changed my tastebuds in such a way, that now everything is too sweet. If a recipe calls for sugar, I end up using half of the suggested amount. I don't eat sugary yogurts any more, just plain with some fruit, even bread, I look for the lowest grams of sugar because it now just tastes too sweet...
Like I said, I don't believe in extremes or fads, because they're hard to sustain! Think very carefully about what you can adjust right now and set small goals to avoid failure and feeling bad about it. Maybe try just one day of full sugar free stuff and see how it goes. If it's unbearable, choose half a day to go sugar free (or one meal, etc).
You can do this!0 -
Good Morning! Its a grey one here, dreary and damp. @AZLisaLou I find that in the daytime I don't have too much problem eating good...its mostly evenings and weekends where I mess up. And, I find that when I do its hard to get back on track. I am now on day 3 of no crazy snacking at night. A real feat for me. Now as the weekend draws near....I hope I can get through that without ruining what I've been accomplishing all week. I do like to have wine on the weekend, and that leads me to munch more.
My new recipe was good, although I was the only one who ate it!! Dh and my son both ended up having macaroni leftovers. Oh well, more for me, right? I might freeze some and I can take it to work if I want to.
Crispy Minis are just those small flavoured rice-cakes made by quaker. You can get quite a few different flavours.
@NadiaMayl thanks for the tips on cutting out sugar, very helpful. I have gone from eating the flavoured yogurt to plain, and regular peanut butter to natural. Little things like that. Do you know anything about Stevia?
I'm planning to do a strength workout today, upper body since my leg is kind of bothering me from my run the other day. Maybe I will check in later tonight. Hope you guys have a great day!0 -
@maureli, where are you from? How are you doing today with no night time snacking? That's a rough part of the day. Why didn't anyone else eat your dinner? Did they look at it, see that it was something different and then turn their noses up?
@NadiaMayl I think I'm going to do a partial sugar detox. I don't know if it will have the same results, but we'll see. The thought of cutting out almost all sugar was sending me into a panic and giving me anxiety lol. I'm sure that's an indication that I need it the most. However, I read an article by someone name Nia Shanks about the reasons to not do sugar detoxes, and it made a lot of sense. The article was saying that yes, we need to cut down on sugar and get it into a normal range, but that doing it cold turkey for a period of time can actually have a negative effect on a lot of people. I can see myself being one of those that it backfires on, with going cold turkey and then binging when the detox is over and being worse off after.
I think I'm going to focus on no soda, and nothing like packaged cookies, cereals, etc. I'm still going to have fruits, yogurts, an occasional home baked something or other and stuff like that. I think if I know a lot of things are NOT off limits that I might do better in the end. With this mind set so far today I've not had any soda, and it's been easy. For breakfast I had 3 pieces of pineapple, a cherry Greek yogurt and a piece of apple bread. Yes, a lot of sugar, but I still feel pretty good about it, mostly because there was no soda involved. (@maureli I've got a HUGE soda addiction, and you'll see that I fight with it quite often!) For lunch I had leftover taco pasta salad which was pasta, shredded cheese, black beans, tomato, corn, cilantro, green onions and the sauce was mayo, sour cream, lime juice and taco seasoning. It was really very good, easy to make, and not huge on calories.
I'm still not logging, which I know is a big problem for me. I do better when I log, but I got out of the habit and now I need to find it again.
Enough of my rambling! I hope you all have a great day!!!0 -
I totally blew it on carbs and calories today.
But still no soda!
So, the apple bread I had this morning was a bad mistake! Almost 550 calories (which doesn't seem like it can be right, but that's what the recipe calculator came up with.) 79 g carbs!!! and 47g sugar!!! ouch. Even the Chobani I had was 21g sugar. yikes! Then I had a bunch of Cheddar Cheese Combos, which I just ate out of the bag and didn't even weigh. Boy, they're tasty though...couldn't stop!!! Need to weigh and then put the bag away. Dinner was 880 calories and a big 68g carbs. I don't mind the 880 calories for dinner, but the 68g carbs is 18g over what I'm supposed to have for a meal. Oh, well. I thought I did good, but when I logged it all, no bueno.
HOWEVER, no soda!!! So I did have a big win for the day0 -
I just learned something. I was shocked and dismayed when my breakfast, which was a frozen treat consisting of plain greek yogurt, strawberries, lite whipped cream and 1 graham cracker, was 8g of sugar already. And the lunch I planned which is steak strips, an apple and peanut butter, is 20g. That already takes me over the recommended 23-25g day, even though my choices seem healthy. But what I just learned, and I don't know why I didn't pick up on this before, is that the 23-25g/day is ADDED sugar. So If I take out the 17g for my apple and about 3g for my breakfast, that leaves me with 7g for the day with breakfast and lunch. That makes me feel much much better!!! So my sugar yesterday wasn't quite as high as I thought (still high, but not as much). When I learned that a few minutes ago, everything was a lot less daunting and seemingly impossible.
Still no soda!!!! woot woot!!!!1 -
Good afternoon, well...the weekend has arrived, I hope that I can get through without sabotaging all the good I've done this week. Its really the first good week I've had in quite awhile.
Did some major cleaning this morning in my kitchen. Been putting it off long enough. Then this afternoon I had a visit from a friend that I haven't seen in awhile.
@AZLisaLou - I am in Nova Scotia....the southwestern tip near Yarmouth. And, the dinner I made, lol....dh has always been pretty fussy about trying different things (although I would have to say that he has gotten better over the years)....so he just took a look and said "I think I'll have the left over macaroni". lol So...there will be leftovers that I am going to freeze.
I'm going to a brunch on Sunday morning with my sister. Its a fundraiser for the school's breakfast program, so I'm sure there will be some temptations there. I guess it will be ok as long as I watch what I have the rest of the day.0 -
@AZLisaLou once reading ingredients and labels becomes a habit, it's amazing and shocking the amount of sugar in stuff!!! Great job on the no soda streak!!
@maureli you can do this!!!! Weekends are also the hardest for me!!!!
We're about to go on vacation to my brother's house for 10 days! I'll still check in here but maybe not every day!!!
You girls can do this!!!
@heatherc369 girlie, hope you're healing well!!!
@Kerryatoon how's the working out coming along? And your shoulder (was it?)!0 -
@maureli How are you doing this weekend? Are you hanging in there?
@nadiamayl Have fun on your vacation! Hope you can check in once in a while. Gets pretty quiet around here.
I'm doing very well with having NO soda for 3 days!!! Can't say the rest of my eating has been completely on track. Right now, though, I'm really focusing on staying soda-free, and then eating better is coming in second. Soon no soda will be 2nd nature, and then I can really focus on my eating. Not to say that I've been diving into boxes of donuts or anything. Just that I've not been completely on track.
Here's to another day of no soda for me! woot woot!0 -
Pleased to report a good-food weekend! I guess its not quite over yet...but nearly. Last night we did out out to dinner. I had pan fried haddock/scallops and rice. A glass of wine. But after we got home, I didn't snack, where I normally would have.
This coming week I am working 3 days (I am part-time/casual) so I doubt I'll get any exercise in until maybe Wednesday or Thursday.
@AZLisaLou - WTG on saying no to the soda! That's great, and I usually find that its harder in the beginning so maybe now that you've got a few days down it will seem a bit easier. Good for you
@NadiaMayl - have a good vacation at your brothers!0
