With little fanfare or controversy, Britain announced Wednesday that Queen Elizabeth II — hardly a social radical — had signed into law a bill legalizing same-sex marriages in England and Wales. . . .

Official word that the queen had approved the bill drew cheers in the usually sedate House of Commons.

"This is a historic moment that will resonate in many people's lives," Equalities Minister Maria Miller said in a statement. "I am proud that we have made it happen and I look forward to the first same sex wedding by next summer."

There were British political figures and religious leaders vehemently opposed to gay marriage but the opposition never reached a fever pitch, in part because the same-sex marriage bill had broad public support and the backing of the leaders of the three major political parties. In fact, it was Prime Minister David Cameron, leader of the tradition-minded Conservatives, who proposed the legislation in the first place. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/britain-legalizes-gay-marriage

Would that the United States had a sane conservative party.

If I recall correctly, Scotland will have gay marriage soon. I think Northern Ireland is still lagging on this front.

Everyone I follow on tumblr has been celebrating it today. And agreed...now if only every state in the US would get on board. My son, my friend's daughter, and my LGBTQ+ friends should be allowed the same legal rights as hetero couples. I'll stop before I go on a rant here and save it for elsewhere.

I think David Cameron, British Prime Minister said it best:

“I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I am a Conservative.’’

Remember, it was the center-right party that got marriage equality passed in New Zealand this year as well. Unfortunately, our conservative party is overrun with religious radicals. And they bear no resemblance to true conservatives at all.

    Love it, Wendyapple!

i think it's so interesting how everyone loves her so. i can't imagine royalty in the US getting the same reception. she's so consistently stylish. i read she has her coats and dresses specifically tailored for ease of waving from coaches at her adoring people.
